Does anyone have a goodwill letter?

I second SAWoman's advice. Sap, sap and more sap. If it's honest sap, great. If not, then at least make it believable sap.

If it's honest, and personal, then the words will generally flow out easier. Also will come across as more genuine, because it is.

Try to think of it as confessing your sins, but this is a "Delete from CRA" card and not a "Stay Outta H*ll" card.

  • 2 weeks later...

I did a goodwill letter, it worked for me, I ended up with a PFD.

I just sent it regular post, 39 cents, (no DC and no PP)

in fact I've never sent any letter CRR,

(even though so many recommend that)

the most I have done is Priority Post (PP) with a Delivery Confirmation.(DC)

I look at it like this....

the way you communicate is all in the delivery (no pun intended)

If you come charging at someone,

the natural response is to charge back.

( I think a CRR letter is like charging at someone)

PP-DC gets you the result (confirmation that it was delivered) without

all the posturing.

Absolutely do NOT, I repeat do NOT, send a goodwill letter CMRRR. Don't send it CM only. Don't send it RRR.

Send it First Class, 39 cent, USPS, regular ol' mail.

If it's CMRRR, they might perhaps wonder, "Is this freak trying to establish a paper trail to sue us?"

Also don't call and ask about goodwill. Goodwill is something of an oddball thing. It can catch an OC off guard, and that's good. Probably gets bounced between at least 2 and probably 3 people before the decision is made.

If they are not sure how to react, they might think, "WTF, he don't owe us any money. Guy's probably smoking something. Delete the TL so he doesn't sue us."

Some more savvy OCs probably react:

"Got another CIC member requesting goodwill, Bob."

"When is the DOFD?"

"When is the last time we did a soft pull of his CRs?"

"18 months ago. FICOs in the high 500s at that time."

"Give it to him. He sounds about ready to run up some debt and make us some money."

BOA might not be as generous with goodwill as is Chase, but they are both behemoth banks so results may be similar.

I had good luck goodwilling away 3 Chase accounts. One had lates up to 120 days, second was settled for less than the full amount, and the third was late up to 90 days but PIF in January '06.

Your BOA account sounds to be an even better goodwill candidate than were mine.

When I was asking if CM with online delivery confirmation wasn't just as good as CMRRR I wasn't asking about goodwill letters. I was asking about everything we do want proof of delivery on.

Wouldn't certified w/delivery conf. be just as good and cheaper? We can print del. conf. off USPS.

IMHO no.

If you are disputing an item you want the signed return receipt, I could be wrong but it becomes a battle of technicalities... whoever keeps the best possible record wins.

I'm super-anal and I record all phone calls (one-party-consent here), take notes on the phone calls and follow up in writing with the transcript via fax. They don't have to know the call was recorded, just that I take bitchin notes ;). If i send a letter, first I fax it to 'such-and-such' dispute department' then send the original with a copy of the 'sent' fax cover via certified/signed return receipt. But I'm in a particularly ugly battle right now and CYA seems to be the name of the game.

This is my personal guideline:

If the item in dispute seems to be an honest error, CM should be fine.

If the item in dispute is a possible identity theft issue, CMRRR is a must.

If the item in dispute is settlement offer, best to send CMRRR.

If its a goodwill letter like someone said... best to be completely non-confrontational.

If anyone else has any dif 'rules' I'd like to hear them.

Again, CIC are my heroes!

My bad. I misread.

I looked into Delivery Confirmation as an alternative to CMRRR, but it's not available on First Class Mail--only parcels and Priority Mail. Priority Mail starts at $4.05, DC is another 50 cents and RRR is another $1.85

First class mail CMRRR is $4.64

You can get Email delivery of the RRR card which is $1.35 rather than $1.85 and save 50 cents.

However, I would be cautious. Judges are used to seeing CM receipts and RRR cards. Introducing something new, however valid it may be, could be a minor monkey in the works should the issue have to go to court.
