NCO sent debt letter, debt is over 10 years old...

Also, I'm pretty sure it's not mine. They didn't report to the CRs, but should I send a DV anyway? All the advice seems to link DV to disputing with CR. Can I use the standard letter?

Doesn't matter, send a DV.

If you're fairly certain it's not yours- then maybe they have the wrong person.

The purpose of the DV is to make the CA prove/validate/verify that the debt is actually yours and that you owe it.

If you do a search for NCO on this site- you'll find PLENTY of opinions/information/experiences on them!!

I'm sure no one here is surprised that they are trying to collect on something so old. And if it does turn out that the debt is yours and you don't live in OH or KY- then more than likely your past the SOL- and you can send them a C&D letter.

If you get bored go to budhibbs.com. Under worst collection agencies you will see NCO.. click on the link to the video investigative report on them. I think it says something like channel4boston

They were fined heavily by their AG a while back and they have sent debts to people who do not owe them.. they have a horrid rep.. I myself had to deal with them to the point of lies on their part .. I ended up reporting them to the PA AG.. they lied about the debt.. it was not mine and they said I had a payment plan in place with them.. also false.. when the AG got involved I got a formal letter apologizing for the "misunderstanding" and it was removed from my CR... they are the lowest of the bottom feeders

Sent CMRR. Just got it back yesterday unopened refused. Is this a bad thing?

Whenever you get these items back "refused" you should keep a log of this with the date. Sometimes you have to send this information FedEx for them to accept it. Most companies will not refuse these as they don't know who they are coming from. 8-)

Whenever I get something returned, refused, I just note on the envelope the date I received it. I already have my copy of the letter I sent, so the contents are unimportant. If you ever have to appear in front of a judge on the matter, hand the judge the envelope, fully intact. It tends to make a rather good point. :)
