Can being an authorized user help improve credit?

Yes, it would help you out as you would get the main card holder's entire history. But with that said, you get the entire history, lates, etc....

Also you want to make sure that they are not over utilitzing the card, as that could hurt you as well. Plus remember that if all of a sudden they decide not a pay, you are responsible for it, as I learned the hard way!

You would only be financially responsible for an account if you were a joint user not an authorized user.

To the OP, please do some searches for "authorized user" it'll give a lot if insight into it as well as let you know which companies report AU and which do not.
