SOL for Medical Collections

Could someone tell me please what is the SOL for medical collections in the State of Mississippi?

I have taken over finances for a family member and there are medical bills from 2002 and 2003 still being sent. They do not have the money to pay and have been placed in an assisted living facility.

Thanks for any info.

SOL in MS for open and written contracts is 3 years. I'd send them a cease and desist letter stating they are never to contact your relative again, the alleged debt is time-barred.

Or, you could just write a letter back to them informing them of your relative's admission to assisted living and any and all funds go to the facility for his/her care. If that doesn't work, use the SOL letter.

Thank you so much for the info. I was going to let them know about the assisted living facility but certainly did not want them to try and contact the facility about it. So far it is a couple of doctors offices that are being very persistant. Would a government run service be like the health department or some such?

I almost sent the SOL letter last week but thought I better be sure of the time before I did. The amounts are not very much, but no $$ to pay them.

Thanks for the info.

There are government run hospitals (and utilities) as well. Usually they have names like Regional or Memorial in the name of the hospital.

A couple of private practice doctors would not fall under that no SOL umbrella though.

If a doctor's office knows that your relative is in assisted living, it's unlikely that they'll bother to call there. If your relative doesn't have a phone in his/her room, then just make sure the staff there knows to ignore any calls from anyone that is not family or cleared by the family.
