Unique Management Library Fines can they do this?

I had a collection account with them from 2004 over library fines. I spoke with the lady at the library and she agreed i could pay the balance of $47. She told me that there system "talked" every night and that the account would be removed.

I talked with unique and she explained that even though i paid the library it doesnt matter and they will just update the credit report to say paid in full!

2 big problems (or questions)

1. The debt was never paid to them so how could the mark it paid and leave it on my credit?

2. That might also change the DOLA and make my credit worse, can they do this?

Has anyone dealt with this situation? Or provide some help!

OK this is what I sort of found out. Im in Ohio and we use that

service. They update it once every 30 days and it should be deleted.

call your main library and talk to the head of circ(thats who handles ours).

See what he says. Have to talk to him tomorrow but will find out more.

hope this helps

I spoke with the financial manager at the library and he said that they will update there system with "paid in full". He then faxed me a copy of a document from Unique saying thanks for the payment. Something is really wrong with what happened, so BEWARE! w/ paying the library

Wow, funny you brought this up! I just finished writing a DV letter to the same company for the same thing. I haven't sent the letter off yet. The late fee has been paid off for over a year now (I've even borrowed other books from the library!) My report shows 'paid' but the black mark is still there. Is there anything I can do about this? Can you only DV the CA within the initial 30day window when they first write you?

Thanks!

I disputed the items with Experian since that is the only CRA they reported too. It came back of course as being verified and i spoke with Unique and they said "we just collect money for the library and since it went to collections even if you paid the library we mark it as a paid collection" I responded why is fair that you continue to collect/report on a account that has a $0 balance. The response was straight out of star wars R2-D2 or the exact same thing over and over. She did tell me to speak with the financial director at the library to see if they can request to remove the account. Hope that helps

Keep me updated please. I have so much trouble trying to get a PFD with these guys on $47! It really sucks. I tried calling the library but they were not too helpful as to getting it off my report. Maybe I should try for a PFD and send it directly to the library instead of UM, since they told me I can pay the account directly to the library in person.

I have the same issue for 78$. The library here send the CA a list every 30 days with any updates.

I wonder if there is a way to use the 30 day delay to get this removed?

Any ideas?

I guess I could pay the Library fine and then DV the collection agency and hope when they call the Library my name is off the list. Not 100% sure how it works at the library though. Surely they keep good records.

These situations do suck (pardon the slang) but you need to understand that the library's 30 day update only involves updating the fine to being paid vs unpaid. That's all.

As with any OC that has turned account over to a CA (not sold it) they are contractually bound to send the payment to the CA who in turn reports it as a paid collection. The CA can then legally report a paid collection with a zero balance for the legal reporting period.

I'm not trying to be nasty, please understand, I am just passing on what I have learned from this website.....and experience. I refer to Divemedic a lot but he has the definitive info on this type of situation.

Your right the library does have a contract with Unique to collect money on there behalf. BUT it makes no sense whatsover that the library would pay a commission to Unique when they didnt collect any money directly. Ive never personally seen whats included in the contract agreement but if i were the Library i would state that if the debt collector recieves money on the account then then Unique gets a commission.

With all that said, i got the account deleted from my credit report within one week. Basically i talked with the financial supervisor for the library and was very nice and explained my situation and i explained to him that they can remove it -atleast in good faith. He called me the next day and told me that he called unique and spoke with them and they said they rarely ever remove an account buy since he asked they would. Then 5 days later its been removed! See this credit repair stuff aint so bad. Good luck

I currently have Unique reporting a library fine that I PAID to the library not even knowing it was in collections; I did it as my civic duty!

I DV'd, no use. I sent a goodwill letter, they laughed.

I don't find them good for libraries at all, and my library hates them because they have more GOOD people getting hurt and they aren't collecting any more than usual from the deadbeats.

Secret....

At least your mother was not the librarian at the library in which a lost book was sent to collections. I have personal experience with library fine collections. She was real thrilled about that one.

So if I were you I would contact the library and explain that you paid them before you got the CA notice and would they please contact the CA and ask them to remove the tradeline, etc..just be real nice.

Plan B- this would only work if you have a receipt from the library or paid by check - would be to dispute with the CRA(s) showing the paid reciept/cashed check showing that the library was paid, not the CA and dispute it saying such. Say that the CA was never involved, please remove the tradeline.

Good luck

I have a paid Unique Collections account on my TU and EX records. I emailed the Library Manager about this and she is adamant that it was a legit collection and she cannot request it for deletion. My crime was 4 books one month overdue and fines that went unpaid for three months and for this I have seven years of damaged credit. I have read all the forums and it seems Unique is notoriously difficult to have deleted. However, the manager did send me. through email, specifics of my account without verifying I was who I said I was. Is this a violation I can use in my favor???
