akins503
I had an old penelec (utility) bill that got turned over to these clowns. I didn't dv them right away. This is because I didn't know any better. However I did pay penelec in the mean time. They accepted the money and these guys continued to try to collect on the account as if no money was received. So I got a call from them trying to collect a few months back. I told the gentleman I already paid it to penelec and he insisted I didn't. He finally got penelec on the phone and they told him it was taken care of. UCB has it on all three reports as paid. I did dv them later and they sent a letter back saying they received my payment in full. My question is can they do this since I really didn't pay them anything? What should my next step be?Thanks
stancil1
First of all, it depends on weither or not the CA bought the debt prior to you paying it off or if they were just an agent.Request verification with the OC, CMRRR. Depending on what their response says, send a copy of it to the CA stating that unless they stop illegaly reporting a non existant debt that you intend to file suit. If CA bought the debt prior to you paying it off though, it's not nearly as easy because that would mean that even though you paid the OC, the OC forwarded it to the CA.
