what happens to old info when CCC change backers

Ok let me try to phrase this so it makes since. I have an old Best Buy card.

When it was opened the financial backers were BankOne. My card was opened in 91 closed around 96. I now have that same account listed under

my CR as GEMB/Best Buy. We never had a card with them under that bank.

BankOne has no record of us but GEMB says we opened that account in 97 and last payment was in 2004. Wouldnt Bankone have that info or when a comp. changes backers they take all info with them old/new. And if they

take the old shouldn't it read BankOne/Best Buy?

I have since ask for verification and will see what happens.

Was the account in default when GEMB took it over? If so, then GEMB is considered a debt collector under the FDCPA.
