OK, I am new here. a month ago, a CA called about some medical bills for a hospital that both my son and husband had been in many times in 2004. I am disputing all of the charges for my son. I set up payments for my husbands bills through the hospital and have been paying them for over 2 years and this CA was stating that they now have the debts and I need to pay them. I asked the rep whose date of birth were on these charges and she gave my husbands DOB. I stupidly told them I could pay them what I was paying the hospital (this was before coming to this site and getting edumacated) She stated I could only pay be doing the automatic withdrawal from checking and I gave it to her! All I can say is I was suffering from acute bronchitis at the time and not thinking right! I did ask them to send the bills to me that I will be paying on....well they sent my son's bills that I have been disputing for over 2 years! She gave me my husbands date of birth on the phone making me believe that I was paying for his charges but that was a lie. Now I dont know what to do......If I send them a CMRRR letter telling them that I am disputing the charges for my son and to cease all withdrawals from my checking are they obligated to? I can do the stop payment at the bank but not sure if that will catch them everytime........PLEASE help.

If you specificaly say that you forbid them any future withdrawls from your account, no they can not, legally, since you have revoked the authorization. However, I would call the bank as well and place a stop payment as well, if you want to wait and see, and if they do withrdraw, you can dispute the charge with the bank, but you would have lost the money in the mean time...

Once you're account number is out there, there's no way to get it back. Closing the account is the only way to guarantee they can't get access.

This brings up another point. Never talk to a CA on the phone. They'll tell you anything to get you to pay. They'll say we need it "today", or "we'll pursue legal action" (which of course is just any action that isn't illegal), or "we only accept payments through automatic withdrawal". When a CA calls simply tell them you only correspond in writing, and hang up. That's it.
