Kat99
Hi all that are helping me so much. I have a very old tax lien on my record that is showing the following:Status: State tax lien paidDate filed: 3/28/1995Date Resolved: 4/8/2004Responsibility: N/AClaim Amount: $111Liability Amoung: N/AStatus Detail: This item was verified on April 2006 and remained unchangedSome history - I never had any notice about this at anytime and dont even know if I had an address at that time. I noticed it about a year ago when I entered the world of rebuilding my credit. I disputed with the CRA and it came back "meets FCRA or something like that requirements. I then got my new credit report and noticed that they had changed it from still owing to "paid". I never paid anything so how could they change the status to show that. Any ideas on how I would even start with this as it is the worse thing causing my score to go dooooowwwn. This thing is going on 12 yrs now and I believe now that I disputed it last year, they were legally able to re-activate the time period. I have read and re-read the thread/primer on debt consolidation, etc. and still dont know how to handle this particular one. It is listed separtely on my CR and it is the OC not a CA. Pls help:-(
lefty
The best I can tell you is to check your states tax laws. You might get it withdrawn if you can prove you weren't properly notified.A federal lien can report forever if its not paid and when you pay it the reporting period starts anew. momof5
Actually, ANY tax lien can report forever if it is unpaid. They put a date of payment. (resolved). That will be the date that the CRA will use to compute the 7 years from.
Kat99
Thanks for the input but I still am not straight on what to do??? As I mentioned in my orig post, I never knew about this tax lien ($111), it was 13 yrs ago, I was never notified by anyone and I definitely never paid anything and it always showed as "unpaid". It was not until I disputed it last year that everything changed. Once I disputed it and it came back verified, they then changed the TL status to say "released" and "Paid". Now, I never paid anything so how can they say it was paid? I will take the advice and check on the tax laws in my state (CA) to see what notification must be given and maybe I will get lucky and they messed up. Also, this is only reported on TU and EX. I am thinking I should fist dispute again with the CRA. If it comes back as verified, I will then DV the OC (no CRA involved) which happens to be my county's biggest court house then wait a couple of days and re-dispute with the CRA (1 - 2 punch). I am worried that if I open this up again that they will also start reporting it to EQ which they are not doing now. Can anyone help me plz? Ahntara
"...once I disputed it...changed the TL status...I never paid anything how can they say it was paid..."Dunno. Maybe you lucked out. Maybe they seized a portion of a tax refund. Whatever happened, you got off without having to send the $111."...then DV the OC..."There is no OC. This isn't a TL (tradeline). It's a Public Record, a legal matter, reflected in the "Public Records" portion of you CR. No one 'reports' PR's. They make their way onto your CR by a convoluted process. If an actual lien exists in Public Records in some courthouse, it will likely end up on your CR for the legally allowable time period; which is 7 years from the date of payment. At least yours is paid and released (the proper disposition for this type of legal action).Narrow your information overload by reading about Public Records, Tax Liens and other such data. There is a lot in previous posts about this that will help you to understand.
