How are fraud alerts generated?

Recommended Posts

When I tried to log into TC this morning, it gave me an error about needing to call customer service to verify my identity.

They told me that a fraud alert had ben put on my credit (by me, so he says) and then had to verify some info with me.

I just now went to look at my credit reports through annualcreditreport.com, and Experian has a statement in there about there being a fraud alert on my credit that was submitted today.

I have not done this, so how could it have gotten there?

Yes, I disputed some inquiries last week through CSC. I don't know why that would put fraud alerts on all of the CRA's.

B/c technically, you're disputing them as "not mine". What you're essentially saying when you dispute an inquiry is that you didn't authorize a creditor to pull your credit. W/ the increase in identity theft these days, the CRAs aren't taking it lightly when a consumer says that someone has pulled their credit w/o their knowledge. They're not going to bother asking you if you think it was due to fraudulent activity by another consumer or if a creditor did it by mistake (oops...wrong SS#). They're doing it for "your safety", as they would put it.

could disputing inquiries put a fraud alert on the accts???

WOW...makes you not was to dispute inquires!!

Yes it could. I've 'warned' members about it in one of those long disputing inquiries threads. Even so, FAs are not dangerous and they won't get you arrested. I've disputed inquiries constantly and they slapped a 7-year extended alert on mine. I really could care less. It's not preventing me from getting credit. And if I learn that a creditor denied me b/c of it (which they can do), then I would get it removed and ask for a reconsideration. I don't lose sleep over it.
