collection agency collecting on an AMEX debt

Hi,

While living in London I applied for and was issued an AMEX gold card. BTW, I am a US citizen.

When I returned to the US several years ago I kept the card active, used it in the US and paid by wiring money from my bank account in New York to a bank account I kept active in London and then I paid the bill via the www.americanexpress.co.uk website.

I always paid on time until December of 2006 and now I have run up approximately $6000 in debt.

5 days ago I was contacted by a collection agency asking for the money. I did acknowledge the debt but I told them I wouldn't pay anything until I received something in writing.

I have no fundamental problem paying what I owe but I won't pay someone I don't know.

I was called today on my cell phone while at work and left a voicemail asking me to return their call today before 3PM New York time. I actually tried twice but was put on hold by an automated operator and did not wait around.

Is there anything they can do to me without corresponding with me via snail mail first? Essentially, I don't want to be sued but I don't want to send them cash without knowing who they are.

Also, it is an American collection agency.

Please advise and thanks,

JackWolf

Welcome to CIC Jack. :)++

So you're back in the good 'ol US now right? When you get the dunning letter, DV them immediately. Do not call these people unless it's to get the address and then hang up. Have they started reporting it on your CR? If so, they should have the address listed on their. If not, see earlier step. Have you read the stickys and the primer? If not, you really need to start there. Here are the links.
