dizzygoldfish
I am currently trying to get rid of my last CC debt. The debt was originally with AMEX and my last payment was either August or September of last year. For a while Universal Recovery Systems was contacting me. I purposefully took out a larger student loan this semester so that I could pay them off and make them go away. Once I received the loan I contacted URS and was not able to get the guy on the phone that had been harrassing me. The VERY NEXT DAY I get a call from The Law Offices of James A. West. In the interest of getting it all over-with I offered $1,700 as a settlement (original debt was $2,100 and change including interest). The $1,700 was about what I thought I actually charged on the card. Anyway, the guy stated that AMEX had not authorized him to settle the account. I thought it over for a couple of days and the next time he called me I said I would pay the $2,100+ he said I owed. He replied that the balance was now $2,250 due to interest fees per my user agreement w. AMEX and suggested that I call them to see if it could be removed.I called AMEX and they say that the debt is now being handled by URS and that they can't talk to me. This prompted me to do my homework which brings me here.I just sent a DV letter to the law office because I can and I want to see what the deal is specifically. I am planning on not talking on the phone with them ever. I now really want to settle this for the original $1,700 just because I think I can.Where do I go from here? Do I need to contact URS at all or does James A. West have it now? The only creditor on my CR is AMEX does that mean they havn't sold the debt yet? After the DV letter what is the next step? Any help would be appreciated. This is a new debt so SOL is not an option also I really want to mitigate any damage to my CR because until this I have had no trouble. Thanks,Dizzy
dizzygoldfish
EDIT: I just called AMEX and actually talked to a person. I told them I didn't want to deal with a CA and wanted to settle the account. The whole time the phone was beeping. I assume I was being recorded, should that worry me? Also, he said no luck that I would have to deal with CA. So how do I figure out who actually has the account?Dizzy

dizzygoldfish
I realize the DV. However, I am unsure what to do once they validate? Send them a letter requesting settlement? What if they refuse?Dizzy
