PFD and Settlment same thing?

Well, you can always offer, but whether they accept is another thing.

Seriously, it all depends. If the debt is past SOL, and you are 7 years and 2 months past DOFD, then they are going to be a whole lot more inclined to accept less than the full amount.

Offer $250 and a delete. If they counter with $200 but no delete, then hold firm on the delete and maybe go up to $300 or $350. Stand firm on the delete, but give yourself something to "give away" in the negotiations.

What's a PFD? Can't find it anywhere.....

Pay For Delete.

With one exception, you never want to pay on a derogatory trade line unless the data furnisher agrees to delete the derogatory information. Be sure to get any agreements in writing and signed on company letterhead.

The exception is when you are applying for a mortgage, a prime lender will deny the mortgage if there are any unpaid accounts on your report, in which case your choices are limited to paying the account, working with a sub-prime lender or not getting the mortgage.

ETA: I wanted to add that the above statement only applies to debts in which you are beyond the SOL for being sued. If a CA or OC can prove you owe the debt, it would be in your best interest to strike a deal, and chances are a deletion won't be included. :(

I just sent some PFD letters out--mainly to medical creditors. I told them I still have continuing medical bills piling up, but would like to attempt to resolve the matter with my creditors, but I will first work with those willing to remove the item from my file. We'll see how that strategy works.

The CA's that I am looking to send these PFD letters to are CA's that are due to fall off of my reports in 2009.

I would love to wait until then and let them fall off but, i need to get rid of these or pay them before I can close on my house this year.

Considering how close these CA's are to coming off of my reports and the fact that these CA's have not tried to contact me in over 3 years (making me believe they might have though i was a lost cause) Wouldn't that make it more likely that they would accept my PFD offer?

It's hard to say, but don't tip your hand about your mortgage plans. Once you do that they will know you are desperate and you'll have a hard time getting anywhere with them.

All you can really do is send them the letters and see what happens.

Has a mortgage broker already pulled your credit report? If not, do NOT let them. If the CA sees "Mortgage Fun Everywhere, Really Suckers" on an inquiry, they might realize you are house hunting and will hold firm to full payment with no TL deletion.

Maybe yes, maybe no. It's going to make that particular CA more inclined. However, if they are generally 2 percent likely to accept a PFD this might make them 3-5 percent likely, or perhaps even 10 percent likely. Another CA might be 50 percent likely under any circumstance, and now 80 percent likely.
