You just can't figure them out.

I sure can't.

The same bank that gave me a credit card with a $50,000 unsecured line would not give me a loan for $8,000 for a car after I was putting over 50% down! My FICO's are all over 750 and I have no delinquencies, 12% utilization.

Thinking this may be a fluke, I tried with another bank. Same results.

One thing that's overlooked by most of us is that when we have a lot of available credit that we're not using, some potential creditors are a bit wary when we ask for more. They often think "Uh, why do you need more? What are you planning? Spending spree and BK? Invest in a losing business and BK? Gamble it all away and BK?"

Also, if a creditor has already given us $50,000, they may think "that's enough." They all have an exposure ceiling... how much they're willing to extend to each of us based on our history, scores, utilization, spending patterns, other creditors, etc. etc.

While that may be the case in unsecured or barely secured credit, I was putting over 50% down..... I would think that should alleviate a lot of concerns - they would be able to get out of the default they fear very easily with that kind of equity.
