RJM collection. Illegal practice? What to do?

I had a bank do me wrong. I moved and they keep my account open & was charging me but I didn't know it until years later in which they say I owe them $686. Now it has been 6 years ago.

This past month I now have RJM saying I owe them $686 and they are showing that "Date Opened" is 12/2006 which is incorrect. Is that illegal?

What is the best way to approach this?

When you moved did you go to bank or call them to close you account? If you left no forwarding address with them or the US Postal Service then I can see why you received no correspondence or had any knowledge that the account was still open. I would contact the Bank and try to work somthing out with them, request that they pull account back from CA, if they claim CA bought it I would Cease Comm the CA, Sounds like it may have reached SOL for legal recourse and the worse thing is your credit reports will suffer that ding for another year before it reaches the 7 yr SOL.

Even though they are reporting the opened date 12/06???

I was young and didn't know all of that stuff at the time about closing an account.

What's important is the date of last activity, or date of first delinquency. This is the date that will determine when it falls off of your credit report. And if they are misreporting that date, then they've violated the law.
