daeroc
i am a resident of maine. i backed out of a lease about 6 months short of the agreement where i lived in florida. i left on personal issues so at that time the last of my worries were my lease. so i called the apartment office when i got back to maine to have somebody sublease my room. this isnt unusual where i lived. they told me they had somebody to fill my room all i had to do was sign a form which i had already done before i left and a $200 fee for paperwork which i sent with a money order along with they keys to the house. a month later i got a collection notice for $3,500 for the term of the lease and they filled the room anyway. they never contacted me about any of this. this is a little over a year ago. now im trying to get serious about fixing my credit and have no idea what steps to take. my question is do they have the right to do this??? i have sent a request for validation to the collection agency, though i feel like im screwed because my notorized signature is on the lease. i have a copy of the $200 money order but i didnt send it registered so i feel i am limited here... your advice here is greatly appreciated as this is a very stressfull situation
