Address On Credit Report

Recommended Posts

Hear me out...so my theory is that the address that appears on my credit report is reported by the credit cards, auto loan and personal loan companies that I have that report to the credit bureaus. Since I recently moved I did not want another address on my credit report...which from what I read has an affect on my credit score. I called up Capital One who has one of my credit cards and asked them to change my address to a PO Box. Jack said that he had to also have a physical address. I said no you don't, can I speak with your supervisor. He said yes we have to have a physical address it's required by federal law. I said well can you send me a copy of that law? He said we do not have that information. I asked Jack again to speak with his supervisor and he hung up on me. I called back...got Erik...he changed my address to the PO Box and didn't say a word. I called Chase, Orchard Bank, Capital One Personal Loans and Capital One Auto Loans and they changed my address without a problem. From what I gather I think all of them just changed my mailing address to the PO Box and probably left my physical address as my old address. Ideally they are going to report my PO Box as my new address to the credit bureaus. And from now until I die I will always list my PO Box as the address on my accounts that report to the credit bureaus. And stuff like magazines, utility bills, etc I will list my physical address.

Does anyone know if there a federal law that says credit card company's are required to have a physical address on the consumer?

Yes... its the US Patriot Act.

Blah...I guess I will write the CRA's and tell them I'm changing my address.

LOL! Well it was a nice try anyway. ;)

But good ol' Pres. Bush feels that only having a PO Box means money laundering and fraudulent activities. That's why a physical address is required... I think you can still have a PO Box as a mailing address though, just as long as they have both addresses.
