My First Visit

Hello everyone ! This is my first time here but I'm looking forward to many more.

Here's the reason I'm here - I was disabled 18 months ago due to a car accident, my salary was reduced significantly and now my credit is in the low 500's. I recently entered a debt settlement program for some (alot) CC debt and am going through a divorce. I was going to hire a company to help me repair my credit but just decided (after looking at this site and others) to try and do it myself...any "first step" advice?

Thanks and I'm looking forward to getting to know you.

Welcome Tj.

I would start by getting all 3 of my credit reports. Not the 3in1 but the seprate reports. They are more detailed. Make copies! Highlight or circle anything that looks wrong.

Then I would read all the stickies at the top of the pages here. Especially this one: Gives you an idea of what the next step should be.

Good luck

Divorce -- sorry to hear it. Be very careful, TX is comm prop state, which means the other party shares in the debt. Cancel anything and everything that is in both names TODAY!!! If the other party runs up a ton of debt you could be held responsible, easier to nip it in the butt today that fight about it later.

Make sure you order your credit reports, you will need them to divide the debt up when it comes time during the divorce. You never know what could be out there that you were not aware of. Make sure it is written out into the decree who takes what debt with them. Although you do this, this does not elimate your responsibility with the creditor, so when you can make sure it is paid in full or the creditor agrees to move it into the other parties name.
