matrixpatriot
Similar situation for someone I am helping out. They are not working due to major illness, on Medicaid. They have no money and are surviving on charity from family members at the moment (though not listed by anyone as a "dependent') - can they get blood from a stone? This person has no money and no way to make money right now.
Miztiki
SSD is Social Security Disability. SSI is Supplemental Security Income.Do you have one or both? No, they can't get blood out of a turnip. Now, if you were married and had a husband with an income and lived in certain states then they could go that route, but to the best of my knowledge, no, they cannot take money from someone who receives public funds as their only source of income. They can probably report this debt to the credit reporting agencies. They *may* be legally entitled to attempt to collect on your debts (if they are within the statute of limitations for instance). Not sure, but if they can, you may also mail them a "cease and desist" letter so that they can't bug you anymore.Hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in.Btw, I've been disabled 10 years. I hope you're doing ok.
Moriah4
Send them a cease and desist letter and demand that they contact you by mail only. Open and read any mail you get from them. You don't want surprises. Contact your case worker for legal aide assistance for possible bankruptcy. They can't get blood from a stone but they can make your credit life miserable for years to come and they do not care what the circumstances are.I was in your situation and still have medical in my CR from my hospitalization in 2001. The road back from credit oblivion is not pretty and when your stuck there isn't a lot you can do. Time will heal even Credit Problems but it is a PITA.Best of Luck to both of you. jbillings2
I had the same problem. In Fl. if they file a judgement against you they cannot seize your bank acct.as long as the only deposits are your SSI.Also if your car is worth less than $1000.00 they can't touch it.Call legal aid for help if you need to,its free, and they were helpful to me. I hope this helps.
