irishfairyspirit
actually he was my 4th. I want to file BK but due to some money I paid my son back I have to wait til May. This is the 1st time I've posted in this thread as I've been busy on others trying to keep the wolves at bay til then!!When I made the appointment I explained that I also needed help dealing with some of these collectors while waiting. This guy I saw needs to spend some time here, he was clueless. He said if I started paying him now I can refer all the collectors to him. I questioned him extensively and asked what he would do if I was faced w/court action. He said he would refer me to someone else but that he thought just the threat of an attorney would scare them off.Has anyone had experience with that? From what I know collectors won't stop unless there is a case # which I will not have til May. I don't think I would hire this guy but would that ploy work? I met with the other attorney's back in August before I knew about this site so I did not discuss any of this with them. I don't know if anyone else has had a situation like this or notThanks
lisajt66
I filed BK 7 in Sept 05 and scraped together the $750.00 fee that day and once I handed over that money I was collector free. It was a late afternoon appointment and the attorney filed the next morning and I never received a phone call from any creditor. I was lucky I guess, it was all business debt and to only a handfull of creditors, each for LARGE amounts of money. But I really never had a single letter or phone call since that beautiful wonderful day I paid the $750.00.
Donna47129
I would start paying him, no lawyer is going to do squat without the bucks in hand. Ask for a payment arrangement.Once the CAs start calling and you tell them you are filing bankruptcy and give them your attorney's number they won't call you again. You have the authority to refer them to him w/o the pending number.
brokeinok
From the tone of your post it sounds as though you weren't impressed with this guy. I'd try someone else, someone you felt more comfortable with. Forking over money to someone you think seemed "clueless" probably isn't a good idea... just my opinion. irishfairyspirit
I was not impressed. i was referred to this law office by a friend at work & though I would be meeting with the woman who runs not this associate. When I told my friend about it she was upset. The woman has helped her a lot so my friend is going to talk to her & see if she will call me directly. I guess I'm a little leary in general that starting to pay a bk attorney will keep the collectors away for the next 7 months. I want to believe it but......... LNY
Trust your instincts. I also started out by going to a "friend of a friend" and wasted not only several months, but quite a bit of money because she didn't know what she was doing. I knew more than she did. Every meeting I paid her for was spent with me going over everything and pointing out her errors (like listing debts as assets, for instance). Every time I went back to sign the "final" papers, it just turned into another session of me saying "but that's wrong!" because she paid no attention to detail.Do yourself a favor. Cut the cord now.
