luckyjaytx
Alright everyone this is my very first post on this site so forgive me if its in the wrong place...Ok, so i was goin to school in Louisiana from 03 to 05. When i was there since i was in the Louisiana National Gaurd my tuition was taken care of. I was also in this program called the workforce investment act which took care of my tuition and or books. Now as many of you heard there was this lil storm that hit Louisiana late 05, Katrina and Rita. Well, i was deployed by my unit and wasnt able to finish the semester. Well, the University said that i owed them for the books that were given to me and they have already sent it to a collections agency. Its like a total of 360.00 but i really dont know if i owe them because i was taken out of school by the government not by my own will. Maybe some of you lawyers out there can help me out. isislc
First, welcome to the board. Second, I'm not sure if this is entirely correct but I'm hoping someone else will fill in the blanks for you. If you happen to get deployed, you are allowed to report this to the CRAs and this will be added to your CRs. This basically keeps any negative information from posting to your CRs while you are doing your tour of duty. Have you tried to GW the college explaining that you were deployed? If not, you might want to try there. If your programs were supposed to be paying for your tuition and books why weren't the books covered? You might want to try there before GW the college, then you have information to go back with.

momof5
That is excellent advice! My daughter quit school and joined the Army. She was sent a collection letter for the "balance due" because when she quit, the school had to send a prorated portion back to the student loan company. The CA was already on her credit report.I wrote a letter to the school and emailed it to her. She printed it off and mailed it.....from Iraq! In the letter 'she' asked that they pull it back from the CA and let her pay the school directly. The president of the school wrote back, thanked her for her service to her country and informed her that they not only pulled the debt back from the CA...they forgave the balance because she is serving!!!! TOO COOL!
LynnInMN
"Well, the University said that i owed them for the books that were given to me"Being deployed doesnt forgive books from being returned. If the books were on loan, he would be responsible to return them or pay for them.
luckyjaytx
If that were true Lynn; then why, in previous semesters that i had completed, was i allowed to sale my books back at the end of the semester? If they were only a "loan" then why didnt they ask for them back at the end of each semester?
