My siggy shows who you are...

Recommended Posts

you signature is obnoxious and a total invasion of privacy. And no it does not describe me.

Actually it is not an invasion of privacy. You give that same information to

EVERY website you visit unless you use a proxy.

Web developers actually need this information to design websites so they can

design properties to enhance the "user experience" which is a completely

different debate and has nothing to do with the original post.

I am positive that unless you are using a proxy it describes your computer,

browser and IP address. I for one believe that protecting ones Identity on t

he Internet is almost impossible unless you use proxies and anonymize your

browser. I for one do not attempt to hide my real name, phone number or

address and location.

And no I am not concerned with Identity Theft

That sig looks different to everyone who views it... no one else on the board can see your IP address or browser, chilton. We each see our own. Not even pandmel is seeing anyone elses. It's merely showing you what every server you browse to can see about you.

Ah how misguided that reply is. Granted I am not recording the information with

that signature but it would be easy to slide in a 0x0 pixel from one of my servers

that does, which I have no desire to do.

All websites you visit maintain logs on their server that records that information.

Even then it would be hard to determine the exact visitor unless they performed

an action on the site that is Identifiable. Like posting on a forum!!

There is no anonymity on these here interwebs. Even google and yahoo

maintains copies of emails that you delete if you use their free email services.

Chilton and Pandmel

I'm glad you brought this up. I had no idea that could happen. Now I have questions...will you answer them?

How did you do it? How are we seeing our own info?

If I go to someone's personal (non-commercial) website is it easy and common for them to view my information? Does it pop up on a screen just like it did on mine or do they have to go search for it? Is the search easy to do?

Do most small personal (non-commercial) website owners/designers view visitors info?

What's a proxy and would I use one?

Thanks

Guys, this is a non-issue.

Everything you see on your screen is due to packets of information that have to be directed to an address that distinguishes you from other users and requests, like sending an envelope full of information. As soon as you get on the net your ISP assigns this address to you in order for anything to happen.

The website needs to know how to behave in your browser based on its instructions so that info is provided as well. In no case is your name or home address available with this information without a summons for the information to your internet service provider who could then look back through the records and see who that IP address was assigned to at that time and then disclose the account holder's info. Most ISP's have a policy of not sharing that information without a strict court order in writing.

It's always there, it's always seen by the server, and no one cares.

hey guys how did you all do this? I did not start a thread on the topic.

If I remember correctly, the first post that started this thread is missing. Maybe it got lost in getting to Off Topic. The OP was asking about a credit related question, and it is gone now. That was your response to the signature.
