Time line for DV

I've read and appreciate all the info and posts I've read on the site and am very interested in starting to rebuild and repair my credit.

Being a "newbie" I have what I'm sure is a pretty dumb question but I would like to start using the debt validation method. I'm confused as to whether this tactic is appropiate as I've got some accounts which have been in collections for several years. There is some info on the DV page about your rights within the fist 30 days of the initial contact by the CA.

Does this mean I am not entitled to have my debt validated years later?

Thanks for the help!

Basically, DV attempts that are not "timely" (within the 30-day window granted to you once you have received the CA's dunning letter) can be totally ignored by the CA's when they receive them.

Some people follow the mentality of: If you dispute the account with the CRA and DV the CA (timely or untimely) and the account comes back as verified with the CRA, you're building ammunition against the CA if they refuse to provide you any type of verification. But, it depends on who you talk to...

I, personally, am one of those people who follows the DV process even though my DV's are untimely...And once the account has been verified with the CRA's, I contine to go after the CA's in writing for evidence of the account's ownership. After awhile, when they refuse to respond, I proceed forward with consumer advocacy agencies and provide them with written proof that I was attempting to rectify the situation and wasn't receiving any cooperation from the CA's... ;)

DV'ing is always an option. Be careful if the debt is not out of the SOL, though - you could give the CA info like where to serve you on a lawsuit.

But at the very top of the page is a link to the entire DV process, complete with timechart and graph.
