How to read a local news story

Recommended Posts

On my list of peeves, local news ranks right near the top. It doesn't matter if it's broadcast, printed, or the anchors themselves - every story is blown out of proportion for dramatic effect. There is very little "news" offered as they all scramble for a limited number of Emmys.

Here's a breakdown on how 99.99% of local news stories play out:

Police Raid Ohio Bar That Served Driver Before Fatal Crash

Yeh, I remember that story....

The Ohio bar where an Adrian man apparently was drinking before a crash that killed five people in the other car has been slapped with drug violations.

What???!!! It's bad enough they overserved someone. Now they've been busted for drug use in the bar???!!!

Officials said Ohio authorities cited the Rodeo Bar for improper conduct for drug possession and improper conduct for drug paraphernalia possession.

Unreal!!! People having a great time in this bar, drinking beyond legal limits and taking drugs. They should be shut down! People should be jailed!

Court records said investigators found a human growth hormone Wednesday during a search of the bar in Oregon, Ohio.

What? Did you just say growth hormone? They were busted for growth hormone? That's the drug and drug paraphernalia you just had to write a follow-up story about? F you. Really. :thefinger:

Tis a sad state for sure.

I REALLY hate the Network Morning News shows. All they do is promote crap. They are 99% advertising in a subtle, yet direct way. Heather watches the Today show in the morning and it just turns my stomach.

I get my news the way nature intended. Online.

I recall years back when the local news was reporting "near collision near airport, as two planes nearly collide on takeoff, story and video at 11"

Naturally, I was very interested and tuned in to see.

They had a video from someone at a park directly on the center-line of the runway shooting straight down the runway. It showed one aircraft taking off on the far end and already in the air, while the other landing aircraft flew over his head and landed on same runway.

What isn't clear, and the news people, deperate for ratings and sensational hooks to get people to watch, didn't bother to tell you was the runway was 11000 feet long ( 2 + miles) and there was no danger. The video, without the depth perception looked like they were close, but in fact they were about 2-1/2 miles apart.

I called them up and told them to go outside and video their hand covering the moon and report that as a near collision.

Idiots. I have no patience for the news people in any capacity.

I also HATE when the news people start interjecting their own personal views into the subject matter? WTF, I don't give a rat's AS$ about their opinion, just report it. Stick your opinions and notebooks up your........

next will be the " in depth, deep cover story on which major league baseball player hangs out at the rodeo bar."

Ok I'm sorry, but this just reminded me of that scene in "Dodgeball" when the girl scout team is disqualified from the finals for using enhancement drugs. I believe it was a Beaver tranquilizer she was using. lol

Hey Doc, were you in Michigan back in the early 90's when the weather girl on channel 4 got fired for making that racial comment about gorillas?

Michelle Leigh!

For those who never heard the story....

Near the end of a newscast, they ran one of those happy stories (the ones they do at the end of armageddon newscasts to keep suicide numbers down) a woman in a dating video clip said that she was looking for a man with “chocolate skin.”

The next story was about a 400 lb gorilla.

Some of you have already figured out what unfolded.

Camera comes back to the desk. Leigh, who is white, looked at the gorilla on the monitor and asked her co-anchors, who are black, if it qualified as "chocolate skin?”

I only watch FOX news in the morning when I'm at home. The network morning shows are useless. One morning my cable was acting up and the FOX News Channel wasn't coming in, so I put it on ABC and watched a little of Good Morning America. Their top news story was about the new baby clothes some former model had bought for her kid. Then there was the story about the professional Feng Shui consultant. WTF? Fortunately, FOX was working again and I was able to get some actual news.

Here's a headline from Fox today:

SAN FRANCISCO — The city attorney sought permission to inspect the car and cell phones belonging to the two brothers who survived tiger attacks at the San Francisco Zoo, but the victims are balking, the attorney said.

I had no idea I've had a choice between a car phone and cell phone all these years.

What rock does this reporter live under?

we need an ongoing thread about the stupidest quotes you've read all day theme...i was just reading an article on cnn about lethal injection. one of the inmates in the story said:

Baze told The Associated Press that he was "tickled" by the state court's decision . "I prayed about it," he said. "I just believed if there was any justice in this world at all, I would get an opportunity to show this stuff. It came in God's time."

of all the things cnn could have quoted the loser on they picked that statement..wtf? i'm sure the family of the TWO victims he killed loved to read that one..

Ok...This one is from FOX but I'm just so stunned by it... I don't know what to think...I know its not a stupid quote, but from a medical stand point HOW THE H*LL does that happen??????

Nurse Died When Epidural Injected Into Arm Instead of Spine, A nurse died two hours after giving birth when hospital workers accidentally connected an epidural anesthesia to her arm, instead of injecting it into her spine, an inquest into her death was told this week...... The coroner said experts found two other women had died in UK hospitals in the last decade as a result of the same mistake.

 This actually happened back in 2004
