I thought I had paid off all my student loans over 6 years ago. Never heard a thing from collection agencies, Department of Education nothing. Nothing in the mail either. I received a fax at work today from an Allied Interstate requesting employment verification. I called the number on it and asked what the inquiry was about and they say I have had a loan in default since 1998. I know I paid these off close to 6 years ago but how do I prove it. How is it that I have heard nothing in all this time no letters etc. and all of the sudden I owe them money, and there asking for employment verification. Needless to say this has totally taken me by suprise. Can you treat Allied interstate as a normal collection company, by sending DV's not sure what to do. There has been nothing on my credit also concerning student loans. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Allied collects for several FFELP lenders and the DOE. You will need to find out first what type of loan this is....call 1-800-4FEDAID. This is the quickest method I know. They will be able to tell you loan type, loan #, origination date, etc.

Thoughts going thru my head....

Could this be a Perkins Loan originated by the school? Often students forget that that Perkins loans have to be paid directly to the school. They pay their stafford loans and suddenly the Perkins loan jumps up after federal subrogation.

Did you go to multiple schools? This can result in multiple loans in different systems.

Yes you can treat Allied like any othe CA however I do not recommend it. They can validate very quickly but since you already are in the garnishment stream, you need to keep the line of communications open.
