Plastic97
I just sent payment on an old debt for a Verizon bill from awhile back. The collector is CBCS out of Columbus, OH. I know they are the correct collector because Verizon confirmed it. The original amount was $240 but I got them to agree at $168 ! I really am only paying it because it is the only collection on my report. It has been marked as a charge off. I want to get it removed asap but who would be responsible to remove that? Also I sent it priority and confirmation attached.

TTigggers
You should have made them agree that they were going to remove the TL before you paid them. PFD
Plastic97
***WARNING THIS MAY CONTAIN AN OPINION****Me too. I could really use a boost. I feel I have been pretty dilligent in the last 3 to 4 years on getting my credit in order. All I have left are 3 closed credit cards which is soon to be 2 in the next month. They all told me I will not be able to reopen them but i will be able to apply for new cards. I am happy though because I see the light at the end of this tunnel which is awesome. I plan on sending out some good will letters soon in an attempt to remove some late pays. I have learned to stay aggressive because they will ruin you if your not careful. Also just out of fun I probably call to talk to a "account manager" every month or so just to let them know a payment is coming. I figure I can call and harass just the same except with out being threatning.

PFDThat's true but that's not a guarantee either. My approach is to follow up with them next week and getting everything cleared up. I will not let up until that occurs. Also I made sure to get their fax & street address. Ever heard of Rip Off Report?

Ever heard of Rip Off Report?Yep heard of rip off report I go there often.Well I hope it works out for you I have 1 CA that I paid 3 years ago and I am still trying to get it removed. If you have it in writing it will come out better in the end. When I'm told that they will not put an agreement in writing I say goodbye until you put one in writing I refuse to do business with you so get lost. That seems to get their attention if they really want to settle with me.
jetscarbie
From what I have discovered about CBCS (I have a few with them) they usually won't delete a tradeline....but I have heard some people have had a little luck after paying them by disputing the tradeline again about 6 mths later. I feel pretty confident to get them to delete it. I don't know why. I have learned you have to work the phone. I know they say don't talk to CA's but it's how you do it. If the person on the other end isn't being helpful at all simply say goodbye and keep doing that till you get the one that will. This has worked for me with various account's. I had a cell phone shut off because I owed too much. I kept calling a different person and I got shut down a lot. Finally this customer service rep agreed on a small payment to turn it on. I couldn't believe it, she immediately turned it back on and they didn't even have the payment yet. Learn the art of persuasion it can really help. conner
I had a CBCS collection for an old Bellsouth account. I will keep you guys updated on the outcome. I think that there is too much emphasis on AVOIDING CA's on here and not dealing with them. I know there are steps to take to make sure if it's legit but once that's cleared up they are a company just like the rest of them. There is nothing great about OC's, to me they are more dishonest and smug. My perspective is in the end we are all still the customers and they NEED our business. momof5
Wow. Hope you newbies actually read the newbie information! The advice one would seem to gleen from this post would kill your credit score if you followed it with the wrong CA. CBCS can and will fold, so they aren't too bad. Pay Asset and see it drop before 7 yrs....NOT!CAs don't "need" you and YOU are NOT their customer...the OC is. Plastic, be careful....your "I will keep you updated, hope you like eating crow. " line is bordering on a personal attack. We don't tolerate that here. If you don't like the advice here, there are plenty of CA oriented sites that would happily agree to the advice you give. LadynRed
That sounds like a good deal to me! Congrats -- I hope your score goes up big time!Yeah.. NOT going to happen. Paying off old debts will NOT raise your scores by any amount, in fact it can LOWER your scores. I'll echo what Momof5 said - CA's don't NEED us, they are parasites and they contribute NOTHING to the economy.

Amerikaner83
the only good I can see out of OPs situation (no offense to OP intended), is that once paid, they may not bother to verify a CRA dispute, since they already have their money.Whether or not that is likely...that's another story. But mom and ladynred know what they're talking about...they always do. I'll echo what Momof5 said - CA's don't NEED us, they are parasites and they contribute NOTHING to the economy. So I am not suppose to pay an old closed account with an OC? That is an old debt right? Explain how this works and how that will lower your score. As far as not contributing to the economy, I don't support CA's but that sound's like an opinion to me. Thanks for all the advice.. just trying to make sense of it all.. some of it is contradictory.. in my opinion.
2001Badyear
I don't believe anyone is suggesting you never pay old debts. On the other hand, don't think for a minute that paying them to a "paid" status will magically change the way the scoring models see them. It sees a paid CO the same as an unpaid CO, for example. The danger is that in some circumstances paying off the debt can re-age the account and now you're back to the 7 year wait for it to come off the report. It's better to try to get a PFD, then just pay it off because it's the right thing to do. Unfortunately it just doesn't work that way.If it's your intent to pay back your debts. and they are your debts, than just play it smart and look out for your best interests. You are just a statistic to these people and your credit score does not matter to them. With a OC, you may be better off seeing if they will reestablish the account with a good TL if it's paid off. This assumes you had a decent history with them to begin with prior to the problems and that they have not sold off the debt to anyone.
