So.. I have been dealing with Portfolio CA for about a year now. You know, doing the DV thing... disputing with the CRA's, blah, blah, blah and I could not get this collection account off my credit reports! It was $600 with the original creditor being USCellular. Anyway, I finally got frustrated and did the unthinkable today: I called the CA. I told them and I quote "You all keep validating this account as mine and I am telling you IT IS NOT MINE". She asked for my social and I gave it to her. To my surprise, she says "Sir, I don't have you in my system".. I give it to her again. Not in there.....

She does a search under my last name, then crosses it to my address and bingo-bango whaddayaknow???? The social listed is XXX-XX-4297. My social is XXX-XX-4897. Umm... Yeah. So, I ask how on Earth they have been validating for almost a year and a half and she gets real quiet and says "Ok, if you would just fax a copy of your DL and SS Card to us and make it attention dispute dept., we can get this taken off".

What do you guys think?? Do I send the info to them to get it taken off? I don't trust these guys.. but, it seems legit.

Don't send them those copies.

Take the AG and BBB route and see if that gets you anywhere. If not, and it really isn't your account and you know they know it's not your account, then file suit against them.

You need to be very careful here.

Did you record the call? If you did then you have some evidence to back you up in case they screw you and you could probably send the info with no problem; that's especially true if you've already given them your full SSN over the phone.

If you did not record, then I'd call back again, record this time, and sort of re-verify what they told you and then, ploitely, ask if they would be willing to put what you were told on the phone in writing and fax it to you. Then you could sned them the info they want.

The point is, before you send them everything they need to "suddenly make the account your accout", you need some evidence of the data they currently have associated with the account.

I agree with everyone else who has responded so far. DO NOT give them your info. I dealt with these clowns for months with my US Cellular account. They do nothing but LIE! They even lied to the BBB and the AG! It took the VA Office of Consumer Affairs to get the job done for me. I would file complaints to all of those agencies I just listed (if I were you) and explain what you just posted. I wouldn't deal with them on the phone anymore at all. Good luck!

I agree. They will change it to your social if you give it to them. Don't do it. Another thing comes to mind. Click on the Method of Verification link. I know that MOV really doesn't work that well, especially with Experian, but there is an image of the request forms that CRAs either use or used to use.

If you enlarge it and read the very small print, it says on there that social security numbers that are close are considered a match! What a joke. If it is not the same social then its someone else's acct.

That is scary that they consider ssn# that are close to yours to be a match. Real scary...
