Amerikaner83
Check this out. Got this link over at DB. It's a PDF guide called Collections 101: A training manual for entry level debt collectors. Interesting reading indeed. http://scottgeiger.com/collections_101.pdfWhere I found it: www.debtorboards.com

NYMatt
On page 48 they make it seem like they get automatic judgments after their lawyers file suit.
HadEnough
a North Korean propaganda publicity release! These dirtbag racketeers use loopholes in the law to '''legally'' extort money from people without having to provide a shred of proof of the debt. And yet he's expoundnig the view that, "the system's rigged in the debtorsfavor." I would be great to see Mr. Geiger's reaction would be when he got targeted by a junk debt collections scam. I wonder if there is, ,honor among theives.'
Guest BucFan
I love this excerpt from pg. 54...Negotiations-"Mister Debtor, I see that your account is three years old, I can give you a one time only discount of one percent for each of those years that would bring this $1,200.00 account down thirty-six bucks, which is a good steak dinner for you and your wife. That will help you, right? What form of payment would you like to use for the $1,164.00 that's left?"

HadEnough
page 41 is great! If the initial collection call is properly done, before the debtor realizes what has happened, the debtor will have given the debt collector severalpieces of information about his personal situation and assets and consented to pay the account. LeslieR
I love all those questions on pp. 44-45 (personal info the debt collector should obtain). WTF gives any stranger that information? I don't care how intimidated or uniformed you are!!!!! (e.g., "What amounts do you owe friends or family members?")Or, on p. 46, suggesting that the debtor cash in the savings bonds he received from his grandmother for his last bday in order to pay the debt? Seriously, who would tell a debt collector this type of info?!

Amerikaner83
I know! It's so freaking funny! But I am actually quite surprised that they spend so many pages dealing with FDCPA and such...I honestly thought they wouldn't. But then again, just because it's in the manual doesn't mean the entire manual is being taught.....I wonder if the "trainers" consider the FDCPA pages to be "extra credit" ? HadEnough
Circumvention of consumer's rights is the main focus. Anyone get anything out of the enemy's 'manifesto' that can help fight them?I find their document flow interesting. Their emphasis on classifying 'files' according to two factors; difficulty of collection' and amount of '$-incentive' indicates that even if you have no other means of fighting them, burying them in documentation, and forcing them to respond to 3rd parties like the CRAs, & the FTC reduces or elminates their carefully calculated profit ratio. Big Time
Good find. I like knowing the mindset they get into and the way they phrase things. That's why they hate it when you just say "I won't speak with you over the phone, send everything to me in writing." *click* (if you don't have a phone recorder handy.) Robert Nashville/Savannah
I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised at the tactics used and taught to debt collectors. Perhaps if anything, this might help people better understand that this is just a job to these people (at least to most of them).About fifteen years ago, I worked as a telemarketer for a part-time job – a lot of the “tools” taught to us were very similar to those taught to collectors; the only real difference was we were trying to talk people out of their money in return for a product/service.For the collector, the “product” is receiving collections from consumers and their profit is based on a percentage of what they collect – they look for efficiencies in generating their product just like any other business does…unfortunately for the consumer, from the point of view of the collector, laws like the FDCPA/FCRA only server to make their efforts less efficient (and therefore more costly) so they look for ways around those laws (some times those ways are legal and sometimes not).Unfortunately, even a collector who isn’t very good at his/her job is usually better “trained” and more able to get the results he/she wants than are most consumers in standing up for their rights…that’s one of the reasons that very few consumers should talk to collectors on the phone (except for things like finalizing a negotiation) as the consumer is almost always “out gunned
