Ok guys, i was shopping around for home owners insurance, and recently purchased new car insurance for me and my wife.

If you are a member of Penfed you can save a couple of hundred bucks as a discount with Geico in the form of a discount just for being a member. Just thought I would pass the info. I slashed my car insurance to roughly 1/3 of what I was paying thanks in large part to this discount.

Do you need to be military or be married to military to join PenFed? I was always a civilian (though I support the troops a million percent! :) )

No. www.penfed.com Apply for the checking account using option #6.

Basically you pay $20 to join an organization who supports the military. Once you do that, you can get the PenFed account.. It's all done on from the penfed web page.

I recently applied for the checking account so I could get their credit cards. Was approved for both cards. Then I decided to try for an auto loan and was approved. So far I'm happy with them. I haven't checked into the auto insurance discount yet because I like State Farm. But I'm tempted to call and see how much my coverage would be with them.

When you sign up for the checking account, do you actually have to use it? Or do you just put x amount (i.e. $25) then hit them up for credit cards, auto loans?

I put $5 to open the checking account and then paid the $20 to join the NMFA. After that I tired for the Visa Gold card...approved...next day I applied for the Platinum Rewards card...approved...same day applied for the auto loan...approved for $25K, thats all I asked for. I had to fax my last two pay check stubs to them for the auto loan. I do not use the checking account and I'm not aware there is a requirement for you to do so. I'm not sure how to get money to PenFed without sending it via direct deposit from my employer or bank transfer. There is an option for you to pay your auto loan via that checking account.

But be aware that a few on this forum has applied for cards and auto loans with PenFed and have been turned down for them. You might want to just do the checking for now and try the cards and auto loan later if that is what you are looking for. Just join for the insurance savings.

I read every post in that thread and all I can is....wow!! Sounds like they are a bunch of prisses when it comes to doling out credit.

I won't bother applying for anything, BUT I will get them now just so that I can in the future as well as enjoying the Geico insurance rate deduction. Between that, and the defensive driving class...that's a good couple of hundred at least a year when I start driving.

Thanks man.
