I have a question about trying to get a valid dispute removed from my CR. About 3 years ago I had a car repo'd. The OC (bank) has been sold to another bank but both of them are on my CR. I have tried to dispute one at a time trying to get it removed but no luck. The CR says "transferred" on both of them. How do I get one of them removed.

Because it sounds less than straightforward, I would do all this via certified mail, the paper trail is likely to work in your favor.

1. I would make sure you have a copy of all 3 credit reports (TransUnion, Experian and Equifax).

2. Write a 'dispute' letter explaining the inaccuracy - and send via certified mail return receipt requested to each credit bureau (use same letter but send 3 versions addressing each credit bureau). Wait for the results.

3. If they are returned 'verfied' by the credit bureau(s), send an 'investigation' letter to the creditor listed on the account, (see Dispute w/Orig Creditors at the top of this web page), read Section 623 of the FCRA and cite the section in your letter, and ask for specific documentation to prove their version of the account - send it certified mail return receipt requested.

The creditor has 30 days to respond.

I'm new to this too, so see if you can get some more experienced members to chime in too. Good luck!

I think the OP's dilema is that it's one account being reported under 2 different companies with neither one being a collection agency. When the old bank name is disputed it is routed to the new bank and they verify. When the new bank is disputed they verify that one too.

I would dipute them as being duplicates and send a letter to the bank advising them of their error. You'll probably get a "canned" response from the bank saying it is being reported correctly. A couple of companies did that to me until with form letters. I did get the proper attention and the problems resolved when I filed BBB complaints.

Best of luck.
