I have free legal representation thru my union. We only pay court costs. Most of the time, I'm pleased with service, but I'm uncomfortable speaking freely with this lawyer. Please don't tell me to ask for a different attny. I have reasons why I won't/can't.

Chase validated my debt; I was surprised because it originated at Bank One. Now my lawyer is asking me to come up with $1000s to settle the debt. Otherwise, we face garnishment or judgement or lein on my property. I've ruled out bankruptcy and my own lawyer is scaring me with the prospect of a trial where the aforementioned would be levied.

If I had 1000s of $$, I would have kept paying on my cc.

What's also curious is that this case is in-house with chase using their own lawyers.

At best I could offer 3k from tax refunds I haven't filed yet, but then it would have to end. I don't have the funds to pay on the debt. My husband is out of work. That's why I defaulted in the first place. My lawyer says that is not a defense. So how do I tell them I don't have $$ to give them w/o doing bankruptcy?

I had 5 accounts with this bank. It was a good bank as bank one, but since it became chase, it got crazy. I was 2 days late on a payment and they put me in default. My payment skyrocketed; then universal default kicked in on my other ccs and I lost them all.

Now I'm down to only my equity acct and this lawsuit on 2 cc.s. I want out completely.

I have to tell my lawyer what I'm going to settle with tomorrow, 4/21/08. He's very formal and wants to keep it that way. Every other lawyer there, I've called by their first name because the firm could build a new wing from the $$ my cases have brought them over the last 16 yrs. So I would like to have a little leverage from you guys before I speak to him.

What are your thoughts?
