A cautionary tale about Macy's

Recommended Posts

It's a very short story, but hopefully a valuable lesson for all of you.

My husband has had a Macy's since 1987. It's his oldest tradeline. (Some of you were not even born yet, right?)

He added me on several years ago as an authorized user.

He was late ONCE 24 months ago. He paid it within DAYS, as in, the payment was 2-3 days late.

Not only did they refuse to upgrade him to their VISA (although they have brought his limit up quite a bit) but...

I applied for my own account and was denied, and the letter I got today said by way of explanation:

"Prior delinquency with our firm."

Can you believe that s__t? A few days late, one time, in the span of 20 years and because I am an authorized user on this account, I'm not considered worthy of a card with them.

I think I'm just going to thumb my nose at him. I already have a Neiman Marcus (can you believe we each broke in our new accounts with a monogrammed sheet for 9.95 and a t-shirt for 11.50? Just try to beat that on the NM site.)

I don't need too many department store cards, but I wanted to have one of my own, and I got it. I know I could try for Target but I think I'll skip it and avoid looking like a department store addict. I'll keep it at NM.

I just wanted to warn people to keep their Macy's accounts clean as a whistle or you'll feel the effect for a long time.

Yeah Macy's and Bloomies, (who I think are both owned by the same folks), do NOT like late payments.

I was apparently one day late on my Bloomies card and they lowered my CL from $1k to $600. I contacted CS and they removed the late fee but said I would have to prove my "worthiness" to get my CL back. The thing is that I scheduled the payment 5 days before the due date, (like I always have with them), and for some reason, the payment posted the day after the due date, although it never had done that before. Load of crap.

And I'm pretty sure that if you ever burned Macy's or any of its predecessors (Robinsons May, etc.) that you will be banned for life. If you apply and are approved, the card will have your previous balance on it...no matter how old.

I really LMAO when you put Macys, Neiman Marcus and Target in the same breath. Talk about range in the spectrum....

Seriously though, that is some great advice and you'll get some rep for it from me. I had burned Macys in 95 and paid them off in '01. Last year they gave me a second chance, and knock on wood, I've been good to them since 11/07. No lates, or nothing.

You really should write a letter to a higher up though...21 years is a long time to hold a grudge. Especially if you've been a good customer. But all the same, I will make sure I'm never late or otherwise deficient with them again. Thanks.

P.S. I was in the 5th grade in 87.... 8-)

Leslie, not true [about being banned for life].

I did burn Macys in 96, but as I said in the previous post, I had paid them in '01 (Pre 9/11 I was trying to do the right thing...whether or not it was correct or not...9/11 kinda sunk my credits hopes real good as well as other problems).

In my case, they took me back...but I was seriously going to have to prove myself...with the measly 100, 200, 300, and currently 800 limit. Don't mind it though, because I have always liked Macys stuff and during XMAS time, can get a small gift card for my sister, who is also a Macys fan.

If you play ball with Macys and stay on top of the payments, they really do show you love. You just have to be good.

AboveAverage - that's what I meant when I qualified my statement about being banned for life. IF you paid them, you're cool. IF you didn't, they'll open an account for you but it will have your old balance on it. At least that's what I've learned in my research and experience.

You are probably right about having the old balance IF you did not pay. Macys doesn't seem to forget. In my case, I paid, but I wasn't interested in opening up the account back up (though I wish I did....).

I just finished spending about $250 more with them. Another 200-300 and I'll be a Platinum Level holder before I get my next CL. Hoping that another few months I can qualify for a Macys Visa....I have a feeling that the requirements for one are bit more stringent....especially after reading about the OP first post.

LeslieR;

You're right......Macy's VISA is handled by CitiBank....not DSNB....

CitiBank does the approving for those and it is MORE difficult......

I've had a Foley's card (from Dallas) then Macys bought them out.....

So in total I've had the card for 12 years and NEVER late or over the limit and I know CitiBank would probably turn me down for a VISA.
