When it rains it pours

This month I learned a very expensive lesson. Earlier this year I tried to settle an old debt all by myself with no legal assitance. I did everything in writing and through certified mail. Obviously with no success or I probably wouldn't be writing this. Now there is a Garnishment on my checking account. So, now I have another creditor is telling me that if I do not arrange payment with them (within in the next two days even thought their letter says I have 30 days) over a dept they have purchased, I will suffer the same with them. Only problem is, I have no access to my checking account until the first creditor is finished with me which will not be until 9/04/08. I do not dispute these debts, I just lost control of them...Now can anyone tell me if there is anyway to hold off the second debtor for a few more weeks? I have no access to money to pay an attoryney and the debt is far below the amount I have seen any assistance for. The two debts together are less than 10 grand. But, I have to satisfy them and make them go away forever.

On the first one, but I never recieved a summons to appear in court.

I did receive copies of garnishment papers in the mail from my bank, I've been told by two attorneys that there is nothing I can do and chastised for not hiring them instead of trying to get these people to accept payments.

It's been very frustrating and now, downright humiliating not to mention a hardship.
