kblasi
I'd like to get people's experiences with the nastiest of the nasty. Mine just happened today:I've been helping my renters fix their credit so they can buy my house. I did the one-two punch with NCO on a debt of about $45 from 5 years ago, out of statute in PA. They sent a letter stating that this is an attempt to collect a debt. Attached is information from the original creditor. Get ready. It was a statement from the OC showing a zero balance! These idiots literally used a pen and wrote a "one" in front of the zero to show a $10 balance!!I'm so angry that I'm on the verge of doing something stupid, like drag this out instead of just doing a stupid PFD. But if they are willing to dive this low, what makes me think they'll honor a PFD. I'm shaking I'm so angry and it's not even my debt. I just can't believe they try to get away with this garbage. If I had unlimited resources, I'd sue them and shut them down.
Florida_Bronco
Wow, that's a stupid move on their part.Did they actually use the pen on the copy they sent you, or did they write in the "1" and then make a copy? If they were dumb enough to write on the copy they sent you, thats very easy to prove, although even if they made a copy it should be very easy to see it was modified. kblasi
Oh no. They used pen right on the two copies they gave us. We're dealing with the brightest of the bunch.Any suggestions for my next step?
Flyingifr
If your tenants wish, that "1" just cost NCO $1000.00.

kblasi
Sure I can get them on a violation, but isn't this mail fraud at this point? There's got to be something worse than a FDCPA voilation going on when you are clearly falsifying documents.
fatherof3
:lol:I think AG for your State would like to see that. I believe they will be able to get some revenue for the State with little effort. They may just help get your tenants the extra funds also.LOL
Bigwoodystyl
There has to be more to it... why would it ever get assigned to a CA if there was a $0.00 balance and wouldn't somebody from the OC or CA notice that they were sending a statement with a balance of $0.00 and claiming a debt was owed?!There is something missing from this; CA can be pretty inept, but they aren't brain dead... kblasi
I guarantee, the letter is real. Maybe collection companies aren't brain dead (debateable) but it just takes one idiot with a pen. My guess is that they went to validate and found that the debt had since been paid to the OC. The CA now wants to play the odds that they are dealing with a stupid person. Don't know why you would roll the dice on a $10 debt, but they aren't logical.
