reverserguru
Has anyone else used Chantix to help quit smoking or dipping? If you did, how long after you had ceased consumption did you stay on the medication? Thanks
DocDon
I took the entire 3-week prescription. Stopped smoking shortly after breaking open the second sleeve. The last few days I cut the pills in half just as if I were taking the start-up dosage to help ween myself off.Remember that it's just an aid to quit smoking. Only a lifestyle and attitude change will get you to quit for good.
reverserguru
Hmm... how long ago was that? It is more than a 3 week program that I was put on although that may be more palatable.I take 1 mg and was prescribed, take 1 week, cease tobacco usage, continue on medication 3 months,I would evaluate the med as effective however it makes me sick (nauscious). I am about 40 days nicoteen free, but the side effects to the meds havent gotten better and I was wanting to stop now.
DocDon
The manufacturers suggest 12 weeks, some (most) doctors prescribe it for 6 months simply because they were told to.My doctor said that was BS since the pharmaceutical companies are nothing more than pill pushers. Based on what my doc said, Chantix works by blocking nictoine from the dopamine-sensitive neurons but it does not make you want to quit. You can smoke right through the entire treatment if you want, but no nicotine is going to reach the receptors but will still be in your system until it is metabolized (nicotine is water soluable). If you've completed your first cycle, followed the program, and made lifestyle/habit changes, the rest is a waste of money(see pill pushers) as there is no nicotine in your system to block. He said it certainly doesn't take 6 months for nicotine to leave your system.I don't anyone who was on the program more than 6 weeks. I would certainly ask your doc. I did not have nausea, but know of another who did and she had her dose cut back. I just got away with vivid dreams and sitting straight up in bed wide awake after only three hours sleep... reverserguru
Umm, I'm glad our governor doesn't wear bikini bottoms, but on the other hand its too bad Alaska is so cold or we might have some good pictures going around the net.As for the chantix, I had a relapse last weekend I talked to my dr about it yesterday and he is switching me to wellbutrine, he said it would compliment the lexapro that I am on. I would just be happy if I could use it in moderation and not be an addict.
Amerikaner83
Be careful with the Wellbutrin. it's an antidepressant and it is easy to get hooked on.

reverserguru
It made me feel really Bleeeeh for about 2 hours after I took it, so I tried to take it right after lunch and just before bed (my script was for twice daily). It does not mix well with alchohol either. The Welbutrin is supposed to have less side effects, but I haven't had a chance to fill the prescription yet. VaSwtness
I've used both the Wellbutrin and the Chantix. Wellbutrin did not work for me; wasn't strong enough and I smoked right through it all. I started the Chantix this past March 31 and quit April 9. I continued taking the meds for 3 more weeks. I think I'm the world's greatest promoter of this drug~!!! My DH started taking it to prove he could smoke through it that it was all a mental game. He quit April 17. Neither of us has any desire to smoke again and it makes us both sick to be around people that do.Oh, and I never realized how awful I smelled from smoking until I quit~!!! DH had the vivid 3-D dreams. I had nothing. No side effects at all.Good Luck
