cityish
Hello, I have gone into default on most of my credit cards due to a medical situation. I recently moved from my house (foreclosed) to an apt., and at that time I called all my creditors to let them know my new apartment address. Now as this situation is escalating, I wish I had stayed more anonymous. There is a UPS store literally right across the street and it would be so easy to set up my mail there. What do you think? Even though I've been living here 5 months or so, and the creditors know it -- would it be a good idea to go get a PO box and change my address with them again? I'm anticipating most of my cards being charged off this fall and going to collection agencies. If they tried to serve me with a summons, would they try to find me at "previous" addresses of record? bigswanging23
It sounds like you have bigger problems than where you get your mail.
chrismg
What would getting a PO Box accomplish exactly?
Robert Nashville/Savannah
I would suggest than any attempt to hide/avoid your creditors will ultimately only server to worsen an already difficult situation. It is important during a time of financial (not to mention medical) crisis to “circle the wagons” and concentrate on what is truly important. However, trying to avoid creditors/CAs will not help you do that…I would suggest that it’s better to be “up front” with them and then YOU control how often you communicate with them. You have absolute control over whether you read mail, answer mail or pick up the phone and the best way for you to come through this is to maintain control. When things turn around, then you can begin to address the issues. swtprncess281
I would also suggest just being honest. I lost a son (18mth) we had no medical or life insurance and all of my expenses went crazy! I thought that if I "disappeared" and ignored what was going on around me it would just go away. Had I known then what I know now I would have just been upfront and tried to work out whatever I could to avoid charge off and collections as much as possible. Think of your future and not just right now. Eventually you will need your good credit. TRUST ME, it may feel like right now is the only moment that matters and you just want some peace (I've been there). It will get better, and you will be a better person for facing it head on and coming out of it in one "peace".
Jackie2
if you lost your house to a for closer and have major medical issues and no assets. Maybe you should talk to a lawyer about BK. It will give you a fresh start. why wait to be sued if you can avoid it?
jrbauto1
PO box is a waste of your time and money. If they can't find you they can always file and get a default on you. You can't hide, most creditors have a hardship dept. Maybe they can offer you some relief for a while. Good luck!swtprncess281, condolece on your loss. God bless. LeslieR
You're going to get your mail either way, I assume (since you say it will be easy to go to the Mail Box store)...so what's the difference? It's not like these CAs are going to come over to your place because they have your address (unless you're BTO, another member on this board, who seems to have all kinds of odd things like that happen ). And, even if they wanted to stop by and pay a Soprano-like visit, they could find you. J/K. Don't wate your money on a PO Box. Just get your mail and DV immediately when you get dunning letters. I will echo some of the other posters, start working the problem instead of letting it work you. I wish I had.
retmar
I agree with all of them. Using a PO will not help, only hurt badly in the end. Remember, service for a lawsut is most often only required to be served at your last known address. Therefore, how many default judgements could you have if no one serves you?Your best bet is to seek counsel and consider filing a Chapter 7. With an attorney, plan on around $1500 to $2000. It is best to use an attorney, especially if a mortgage is involved. If this is not the right move, at least the attorney can give you some insight as to your next move.Keep us informed and we will assist where we can.
