Results of recent spree

Recommended Posts

I tried to stay on the wagon but once I fell off...

HSBC American Dreamcard - accepted! (limit, rate not yet known.)

Target card (going for the VISA but I guess I'll take anything, and this is after I said I didn't want any more dept. stores) I called to check status and they are sending me something to verify my address and I should call when I receive it

Sam's Club Discover Hell to the no (as someone else put it recently); already have a Sam's Club with high limit, so... good enough

Texaco VISA Hell to the no again, they said just now on the phone - already have a Texaco so good enough with that, too - but can you blame me for trying?

Juniper Gas Card, already forgot which one - H.T.N. again, "sufficient credit with Juniper card" Yeah, yeah, yeah.

GE Money Bank Low APR VISA - said no,due to bankruptcy in 2002

The hub's spree:

Patelco VISA - Accepted with $2,000 limit!

HSBC Dreamcard - said he would hear in a few weeks, but they asked him if he wanted to transfer balances after that. Weird!

WaMu VISA $1,300 limit! rate: ?

USAA MC $5,000 limit! rate: ? (this is old news from 3 weeks ago or so, but still, it's a breakthrough for him to get into USAA)

Texaco VISA - called him to verify address, identity, etc., then sent a letter telling him no, due to being unable to verify address!! This after he's been a GE Money Bank customer for years with other cards!!

I have no idea why, but he decided to dance with the devil and apply with crapola one. I don't know what got into him!

I will update as I hear back on all of these. The only score I know for real is 690 (or 687 after all these apps) for me and about 656 for him. Both EQ FICOs.

Yeah, but remember they're not all mine. Two different sprees listed above.

I'm not sure if I reported this, either, but when the hub got the bank consolidation loan, he found out at the last minute that they required him to close a bunch of the cards he was paying off. So he's pretty much recouped credit limits he closed down then, improving credit at the same time with the likes of USAA and Patelco (better than Orchard and Merrick any day.)

I have been very pleased with my "Platinum (Cash) Rewards" Cap1 card. They steadily increase my CL and the rewards are accruing nicely. I tend to use exclusively for business and I have about $100 in cash reward available since opening the card in April.

Notwithstanding other factors, with his score, he should qualify for this one.

You should consider trying for that Sams Club Discover. I went for it and got approved. They still have my old Sam's Club card open too. Now I have a 'new' sams club card that can be used anywhere Discover is accpeted and get cash back on it...

My old Sams Club card limit was/is $1000 and I only got approved for $650 for the Discover but the fact I'm getting cash back makes it worth it.

Well, I did try, and I was trying to communicate that they said, "H. No," like the others, but now that I think of it, they said I'd hear from them.

The problem is that even though I checked the box for Discover it said, "Thank you for applying for a Sam's Club Card' as if they already knew I won't get the Discover.

This is sort of like when I go to the Wal-mart card application site, it says, "We can only offer you a Wal-mart store card at this time," before I even apply. After I sign in to the Wal-mart page, I think they know who I am... they already sent me a pre-approved store card offer at their lower-tier rate so I did not bite at the bait. But apparently their computer cookies know who I am and know I am not Discover material.

No problem. You reminded me that they didn't actually say no!

I got the weirdest letter from Target in the mail today. It says that they had to stop processing my application because of inability to verify my address based on data from TU. They want a copy of driver's license and utility bill.

I'm not sure I want to go through all this for a $200 Target card. I was hoping for a big fat VISA but I bet it would be the lil' redcard. I might just let it go. Haven't decided yet.

And the DreamCard actually came in the mail! Applied on the 9th and here it is on the 15th. (I never pay for rush delivery because I think it gets to you within a week anyway. Rush delivery is mostly a rip-off gimmick.)

"when the hub got the bank consolidation loan, he found out at the last minute that they required him to close a bunch of the cards he was paying off."

Do they actually wait for you to close the accounts before you get the loan or are you just expected to? When my girlfriend got a home-equity loan a few years I they wanted her to close the accounts but she never did.

Good question. He talked to someone on the phone the day before coming in to sign final paperwork. He brought in final balances, account numbers, and addresses, and they drafted letters for him to be included in the envelopes with the checks they mailed out.

Most of the accounts were closed down but a few ignored the letters and left the cards open.

I know by now this is a moot point because the card has already come in the mail. But, this is not weird. If he transfers balances, then the outstanding debt from those balances isn't counted against him in DTI (assuming the balances he transfers were listed on his CR). Therefore, if one transfers balances, s/he will generally be approved faster, and possibly with better terms, depending on the issuer.

FWIW, and despite what I just said, for too many reasons to list, I'm not an advocate of transferring balances between CC, regardless of APR discounts. Just pay the revolving debt off...

I know it's confusing, because I really listed two sprees there (separated and labeled), a his and hers set of sprees.

I got my Dreamcard and I did not transfer any balances and won't.

He did not get the card nor did anyone contact him, so unfortunately I bet he'll be getting a turndown letter in the mail. I think the question about transferring balances was a standard part of the application process that they ask so they can implement it, should the applicant get approved.

*Thanks for the info, though, about tranferring upon application. I have always wondered about just what you mentioned, and I tend to say no regarding that question, thinking I'll work out any balance transfer details later, should I decide to take advantage of that. I sort of suspected it might muck up the application process to say say while applying, but I also wondered if it might grease the wheels on the contrary, due to the reason you just mentioned (the DTI).

Their standards are low, people.... (they accepted me and the hub) so if you're looking for an easy snag, there you go!

Before you go for an easy snag, people, if you are like me and already have an HSBC card, make sure that you can have more than one HSBC card. I know from their soft pulls I can get their Weekend card if I wanted to, but I want to wait the year and see if they'll play ball.
