My Puppy was attacked on Sunday...

Recommended Posts

My puppy, Sadie, was attacked on Sunday. Squeaker and I were at the Magnuson Dog Park in Seattle, an off-leash dog park. We had been there many times before without an issue. It was a nice sunny Sunday and we were down by the Lake when another dog came up to Sadie, sniffed her once, then attacked her without warning.

Squeaker and I tried to get Sadie out of this dog's jaws, but it wasn't quick. The other dog had bitten her stomach and tried to go after her neck. We finally managed to free Sadie, and we rushed her to the local animal Critical Care emergency clinic. Doctors had her somewhat stable, but it is very difficult to stabilize a dog that young and small. They let us go back to where she was, and she opened her eyes and saw us. She knew we were there for her.

The doctors told us to go home, they had her as stable as they could get her, they'd call if we needed to come back. Well, they called about an hour after we left, telling us that Sadie was crashing and needed emergency surgery. We went back to the clinic and waited.

Through 3 hours of emergency surgery we waited.

Unfortunately, our baby girl didn't make it.

This dog ripped her intestines to shreds and bit one of her kidneys in half. Sadie was a hell of a fighter, but her little body couldn't take it.

We were not able to get much information about the dog that attacked her (or its owner) as we were too focused on getting Sadie to the hospital. All we know is it was a black dog, maybe a Lab or Lab mix, possibly some type of herding breed (from a witness we found). That's it. We filed a police report, and once we have a copy of it the local News station is interested in airing our story and helping find this dog.

We don't want this dog to be put down, but we do want this owner to take responsibility for his dog's aggressive behaviour. Dogs like that should never be allowed in dog parks, especially off-leash ones. It came to our attention Monday that the owner of that dog actually HAD a muzzle for his dog, and didn't have it on! He only put it on AFTER his dog attacked our Sadie! HE should be put down, not his dog.

We loved our little "Sadiebear". She was our little girl. We only had her for 2 months, but it was the best two months possible. She actually graduated from her doggie obedience school the day before she died...and we had enrolled her in the "beyond basics" classes for next week - she was so smart she skipped a level!

She was the best thing we could have ever hoped for. She knew we loved her with all our heart and did everything to protect her. But there are just some things you just can't protect her from - and this was one of them. It hurts. It breaks our hearts every time we think of her. But we know she had the best possible life she could have.

Rest In Peace, Little girl. Mommy and Daddy will always love you.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.

There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Man that's one of the worst things I've ever heard. This was a terrible fluke and I hope you're not beating yourself up over it. No way that was a lab though, they are the standard for large family dogs with good dispositions, and I have a black one.

Give yourself a good grieving period and don't let this stop you from trying again. My experience the renewed companionship ends up better than any guilt or jading in the matter.

I really love animals and feel your pain. Tragedies are the worst.

Ak I feel so bad for you and squeaker...

I know you took awhile to find a dog and she was a cutie...the good thing was she knew she was loved. And she saw you before she went so she knows you were there for her...

It's hard when we get attached so easily..I am sure you meant the world to her too...

I will pray for healing for you...

I'm so sorry for your loss!!! Since you were able to gather all that extra information about the muzzle and such, I hope one of the witnesses will come forward with more information about the owner to track them down. They will be caught, don't worry about that.

I'll be honest I was tearing up too. I have two black labs and it would eat me up inside if something like this happened to them. I hope you find the owner of the other dog. Something needs to be done about him. I would have done something to the other dog too....

A huge thanks to eveybody who has kept us in our hearts and thoughts and prayers. There has not been any new information unfortunately, and the local news station (yes, KING5) isn't interested in the story until we get a copy of the report. Unfortunately, the Damn reports won't be here for 5 days! So I'm in limbo here.

I"m planning on going back to the park tomorrow around the same time it happened (a week to the day) and see if anyone else knows or has seen anything.

We put posts up on Craigslist about this incident, and a few Seattle blogs have posted our story as well.

We have had an incredible amount of support from strangers over the course of the last week...hell, even one lady who works at Boeing offered to give us her little toy poodle! Of course, we declined.

We will get another dog. But we don't know when. Squeaker and I both want another dog of the same breed - we never got the chance to raise Sadie, so we want to give another little Shih-Pom mix a chance at a good life as well. For obvious reasons we don't want one that looks like Sadid did.

I firmly believe that spirits of our pets reincarnate. And that our next puppy will have some of Sadie's traits. Be it looks or personality, there will always be a little bit of our little "Sadiebear" in whichever puppy we get.

How sad, I'm so sorry you lost your 'baby' :(

If anyone watches Dog Whisperer, you'll know that dog parks are full of unbalanced dogs with way too many issues - and people who cause and foster those issues with no clue that they're doing things the wrong way with their dogs. The owner of that dog definitely needs to take responsibility and face charges!

Kaner - Sadie is a beautiful gem. My heart goes out to you for your loss. No poor animal should have to endure that.

If it was my dog, I would be on a life-long mission to hunt that owner down and felt the legal rage of my wrath. My dog was attacked a year ago, and I still periodically ping the city and HOA manager to make sure that dog is out of the neighborhood for good. You are a braver man than I.
