Will DV'ing an old collector that is unpaid and on my report be legit?

Hi,

I have a couple of collections that are 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 years old and they are unpaid on my report. The balances look innacurate but I'm unsure due to the fact that alot was going at the time. My question is if I send them a DV letter, are they required to validate it since they probably notified me originally that I had 30 days to dispute. I am not positive they did though.

If they're CAs, then you can always take the position of "hey, I just found you on my CRs. I never had an account with you people. Prove to me you have a right to be there, or get off my reports." Which is a kind of DV....they may or may not respond.

Realize that by doing this, you're bringing yourself to their attention.

Thank you for the info. Greatly appreciated! One account was from TXU and its paid. The CRA's verified it, but we had electric service at the time but did get behind a bit and it was never suppose to be a charge off due to the quick attention we took to this and got it paid up. Also which letter template should I use for the letter you suggested?

Sweet! I always enjoy the info. One last question regarding this account:

Would I come out better possibly writing a higher up in the company explaining the past hardship and also bringing to their attention the quick payment that we made to address this item. I might also state that Im a current customer that is on time, and this negative entry is drastically affecting my scores due to there are only 3 collections?

Sorry if that was confusing :)
