I watched the first episode Friday, and I'm hooked. Yes, Sea Shepherd is perhaps a bit radical. Founder Paul Watson also founded Greenpeace, but he was kicked out of Greenpeace because he was too radical for then. However, I find it difficult to argue with his reasoning that the Japanese are whaling for profit, not research, in violation of the treaty they signed.

I'm not too impressed and I'm kinda liberal.

If they are acting like pirates they should be shot. They are after Japaneese businesses hunting whales but what would they do to a 6 year old fishing for crappie? Where would you draw the line on which one is ok? Is harpooning a whale any worse than hooking a fish, beheading a turkey, or bleeding a cow?

Is the line whether or not they were born or bred to die? Thats not as fair to objectiveness. Yeah, that probably sucks the japs are ramming spears into the sides of whales, but does that mean I'm going to eat less trout or salmon? no. But thats coming from some nasty person who eats what jews and muslims won't and think it tastes oh so good. How could I live without bacon and sausage or baby back pork ribs? Save the worms or something that tastes bad.

I saw that show too and I don't agree with that guys tactics...I know him and his crew are trying to do something good, But he puts his crew in a lot of danger sending them to board a vessel with out permission, and trying to take out their screws with rope.. He is lucky the captain didn't shoot them, or better yet through them overboard. They are in international waters. I think that guy is on the extreme side. There are plenty of HUMANS in the states that need help more than whales....IMO...BUT I don't think it is okay to slaughter by the hundreds either...However the Japaneese eat whale and do use it so it is not like they are hunting for sport....so I am at a weird position with that issue.:) I just hope no body gets killed...

So killing something endangered is worse than killing something thats not... Hmmm, bet the unendangered thing dying might not agree. We didn't care too much about wolves or buffalo or anything else that interferes with our way of life.

"We" didn't care about killing whales to near extinction either until not so long ago. Apparently the Japanese still don't care if they wipe them out.

And yes, it is worse to kill an animal to extinction than it is to kill one whose populations are healthy. Sure, not on an individual level, but on a species level.

If there were millions of them, I wouldn't care so much. Just like there are millions of crappie, so a kid fishing for them isn't going to send the species to oblivion--and that is the entire point of the international ban on whaling. We're too smart to keep on exterminating species off the planet these days.

And personally, I hate that wolves, cougars, bear, buffalo, elk, etc have all been virtually wiped out of 70%+ of the US. I hate it when somebody kills a snake for no good reason. I don't care for deer hunting either, but I accept it has a useful purpose--since we've eliminated all of the deer's natural enemies their populations must be controlled for their own health.

For as smart as humans are, we sure are stupid sometimes.

One day, when I was about 10 years old, I thought I did. I was fishing in Lake Jackson, near Sebring, FL with my grandfather and I caught about 50 of them. I was using this really tiny gold hook with a little grubworm on it about the size of a piece of rice. They went nuts.

My grandfather passed away last year, at age 96. He had Alzheimers, but one thing he never forgot - for whatever reason - was days like that ... spent fishing.

I remember getting into a mess of crappie with my dad, good times. I also remember shooting a deer, I had to fake being stoked about that afterwards. There really isn't much differnce between the two but the way I feel about them.

I don't like whales getting killed either, and to be honest, I was a little drunk when I commented on the post. I think the japaneese boats would be justified shooting anyone or taking out any watercraft agressively terrorizing their boat.

Honestly, I have not seen the show and have no intention of watching it.

Although I don't believe that we should kill any animal to extinction, I fear the net result of a show that glorifies 'end justifies the means'. Although this program probably shows that these people are just trying to save and endangered species, other viewers with less than 'noble' agenda may use this in their own minds to justify execising the same behavior to justify their own cause.....

Not a good idea.

I only watched a couple episodes and your comments are completely correct IMO. If you justify this conduct based on conscious you could not object to others using similar tactics in other similar yet opposite tactics you might not agree with.

Troll?

Im not really a troll, although my hair is occasionallyh messed up and I may find myseof stinky and have to take my shower at night instead of in the morning. I can see where the confusion comes from man with a plan but I can accept private comments from ignorant people. Just ask Love, Beal, and Nixon, I don't hold a grudge or embark on vendetas, I also don't cow to innuendos, but am invigorated by them. If you want to start one, be my guest. Win or lose, at least it is something to do.

Have you guys actually eaten whale? Don't knock it until you try it. Humpback Scampi is to die for. <kidding>

I watched one of those episodes. There was a rubber dingy zipping around a massive Japanese fishing vessel that looked more like aircraft carrier than a fishing boat. I think these Greenpeacers are nuts.
