Any one know the SOL on utility bills. DW has a utility bill collection for over 1000 dollars, we had a rental that the tenants ran up a bill and then left and since the gas company cant find them they say since it was our rental we are responsible for the bill. The gas was not in our name as tenants paid utilities.

I disputed this well over three months ago and it says on the CR that it was disputed and meets FCRA. I thought after 30 days the CRA was supposed to delete it.

The last date they updated was 9/2006

I would take it up with your local public utility commission.

If the bill was in the tenants name and they transferred the bill to your name, they cannot do that.

If the bill was in your name and the tenants were supposed to pay it, it is your bill. You would need to go after the tenants for the money.

They may be able to do that, according to state law, or county ordinance. Gunny, contact your local Clerk of Courts for specifics relating to landlord/tenancy laws & the local utilities. The gas company may have legal right to require payment from the title holder (for the property) if the tenant/account holder defaults.

So, your first step is finding out IF they can. Once you know that, you can make a plan of action.

Actually, I was never on the title I was buying it on contract. The gas company attached it to the bill at the address I was living at before I moved to the one I am living in now.
