Our new Puppy

Recommended Posts

OK -

So most of you know that Squeaker and I got a puppy this past summer, named Sadie. Most of you also know that she was attacked before Halloween and didn't survive.

We made the decision to get another puppy - same breed as Sadie - (Shiranian...Shih Tzu / Pomeranian mix). So we contacted the same breeder we got Sadie from and she was great to us - and last night, we picked up our new baby, Lilly!

We call her one of Sadie's cousins. Same breed, but different parents. There are some things that Sadie did that Lilly is doing as well...and I totally believe in puppy reincarnation of spirits.

I see a little bit of Sadie in our new little girl:

Obviously we aren't taking Lilly to any dog parks...but we are still going to have her socialized. The local doggie obedience school place has puppy social classes taht she's going to be starting next week, then she'll be enrolled in the basic obedience school as well.

We love our new girl!

The day that the relationship became serious between my wife and me was the day that I gave her a puppy and several months later was when I proposed to her. So in a way, I have been together with my wife for as long as we have had the dog.

As a result, I know very vividly how tangible a pet is in a relationship/marriage.

I like watching Cesar but I think my dog is pretty well behaved. He was crate-trained and he did very well. He makes a good guard dog for me and the girls. And I swear... he really knows what I'm saying.

If I tell him to get his rope... he goes and gets his rope toy. If I tell him to get his dino toy (stuffed animal), he gets that. If I put three treats down on the floor in front of him and I point to one, I then tell him "Rocky, you only eat THAT one." That's the only one he'll eat. I can walk away and the other two treats will still be on the floor.

He catches all sorts of things in his mouth if you throw them up in the air. He's especially good at this with cherry tomatoes. If he spits out a treat and I tell him to "eat it all gone" he'll talk back but he'll eat it all gone.

He speaks on command, but only if I tell him to. He won't speak for anyone else unless I give him permission.

He has been trained not to bark inside the house. He will only bark if he's outside and someone comes on the property. We have dogs in our neighborhood that bark their butts off. He stays silent.

He knows sign language. My oldest uses it to communicate with him. And he actually obeys when she signs to him. I have a special code word for attack - really helpful if I ever have to deal with my ex coming here .

Part German Shepherd, part Australian Shepherd. He's 3 and a half years old and 68 pounds and he thinks he's a lap dog.

My youngest and I were in our local pet store (behind our house) when she spotted the cute puppies they had.

"Oh Mama! I want one!"

"No Bug, we already have a dog, 4 cats and 2 snakes that you don't help out with now."

Half an hour later, as I'm getting stuff for the snake tank I hear "Mama, I want a ferret. Can I get one? Please? They're so cute!"

"No Bug, we already have a dog 4 cats and 2 snakes that you don't take care of. I am not spending more time taking care of a stinky ferret."

"But Mama!" (in her best drama queen voice). "I want one! And I would take care of it!"

"Well, Bug, you promised me you'd help take care of the snakes when we got them. You don't help and I'm the only one who ever feeds them or changes their water or plays with them."

"Well, when we get home, I'll play with them. Now can we get a ferret?"

*sigh* "I said no. Capiche?"

"Yes Ma'am."

Ahh the life I lead with a six year old going on 30.

Lily is absolutely adorable!!!

We also got a new dog this year. Her name is Lola and she is a Puggle (Beagle/ Pug) It was a pretty cold winter this year in IA, so I got her a hooded sweatshirt. My husband thinks I'm crazy, he might be right when it comes to this, because after she out grew the sweatshirt she needed a coat :) If nothing else it helps keep her dry when it snow/sleeting. (that's my story and I'm stickin to it)

It's funny that years ago our dogs would be considered "mutts" because they aren't a pure breed. Now it's all the rage to have a "designer dog" like ours.

hehe i totally forgot about this thread! :-)

There was a puggle in our obedience class when we still had Sadie - VERY hyper! As well as a "Bug" - Pug / Boston terrier pup - Sadie liked them both :-)

Lilly will be in basic behaviour and obedience soon enough - week or 2 from now methinks...
