siaan
Where do go about locating a reputable attorney that won't cost you an arm and a leg?i live in the state of Kansas... i contacted legal aid services today. they do phone applications before advising you of what legal assistance is available to you. gave them my information was advised i would need to see out a private attorney. i would be subject to their fees and costs to file BK. I don't have any savings or expendable income to pay an attorney...what other options are out there if you do not qualify for legal aid. Is it possible to locate an attorney that is reputable and is not expensive. oh i did a free consulation with an attorney she wanted to charge me $1599 includes $299 filing fee.Any suggestions?siaan
bingo
Well, you can continue to shop around. Many people stop paying all debt they wish to discharge and use those payments for legal fees. Also, use your tax refund {if any}.
Denita
Also, many of the attorney's will allow you to make monthly payments to them. They will not file a Ch 7 for you until you have paid in full. But once you have retained the attorney with a small deposit, many will take the CA's phone calls. Yes, you usually have to stop paying the unsecured debt to make the attorney payments. If you are filing a Ch 13, many attorney's will roll up the fee into the plan payment. jq26
Good advice posted above. $1599 including the filing fee is not bad at all today. It sounds like you have income since you did not qualify for legal aid, so you may want to try to go the payment route. If it is a simple Chapter 7, you could always file pro se. But keep in mind that it will require a lot of homework and late nights reading.
