Cook County Sheriff Thomas Dart in Chicago has filed a federal lawsuit calling for a ban on the Erotic Services section of the website. He claimed that the owners of the site facilitated prostitution by failing to block blatant offers to trade sex for money. "Craigslist is the single largest source of prostitution in the nation," Dart said at a press conference in Chicago. "Missing children, runaways, abused women and women trafficked in from foreign countries are routinely forced to have sex with strangers because they're being pimped on Craigslist." almost_there Posted April 6, 2009 Report Share Posted April 6, 2009 I had a friend mention to me one time that there was seriously messed up stuff on Craigslist personals, but when I took a look I was mortified. The things going on in that part of the site are truly disgusting! Some are just funny but most are exactly what the story says. I've looked, purely out of curiosity , twice and then went and told my husband "guess what crazy $h*! I read on Craigslist?" I love the site for buying and selling things, but buying or selling sex is a whole 'nother thing!! I'd say they need to shut it down, that part of the site I mean.I also don't know which is worse, buying and selling sex or the people on there looking to cheat on a spouse/significant other for reasons they try to justify..."the bitch cheated on me, now it's my turn" or "I'm about to get married and looking for no strings attached fooling around..." stefdr Posted April 6, 2009 Report Share Posted April 6, 2009 Lets see, one person in good at mowing lawns and other yard work, paid cash for providing the service - no issues.Another person does general handyman services and home repairs, gets paid cash - no issues.Another person is good at doing the hibbity bibbity, and gets paid cash for the service, and suddenly providing a service for cash is an issue and everyone is in an uproar about it. You can find stuff just as questionable in classified adds in in the newspaper...That's what I find disturbing. I hope Craigslist beats this thing. Here's an idea for the Illinois sheriff- just stay off Craigslist. Its like these nutjobs who have serious issues with porn, surf the net, and then try to get sites closed down. That being, as long as the 'physical act' takes place indoors its legal.One day during the summer a couple of years ago the state police raided all the masage parlors and made hundreds of arests. The AG threw out the arrets the next day for reasons I metioned above.So for the past two years the police have been screaming to make the law tougher and close the loophole, the AG saying its tough enough, and the legislature pretty much sticking their fingers in their ears and going "la la la"... Laine540 Posted May 14, 2009 Report Share Posted May 14, 2009 I used to like to read the employment ads on Craigslist, but ever since this story started to break last month, the legitimate job ads have been overrun by ads that sound like men soliciting prostitutes. Ads that request a female to come to their house for house cleaning, or laundry, or whatever services they came up with for the ad. I guess I'm saying I wouldn't care as much if those ads were all listed under an erotic services section, but I am more irritated that they are cluttering up "real" job ads. Personally, I think its like marijuana. It is widespread, it is illegal *wink, wink*, but no one really does a d*mn thing about it unless you are on the radar for some reason. I think it is ridiculous that craigslist was pressured into removing the ads. It is a private website. If people don't like it, then stay off.
