What is considered accurate reporting for a collection agency?

Looking through my 3 credit reports I get a little confused on what is considered accurate information that a collection agency can report.

Should delinquency dates, date of last activity, date opened reflect the info of the original debt or can the collection agency use its own dates from the date they aquired the debt? Is it okay that a collection account is marked open?

Pointing me in the right direction is greatly appreciated!

CDIA is a partnership among the big CRAs (the 3 usual suspects + Innovis) which developped the METRO-2 format used to furnish data to the CRAs.

They publish the "Credit Reporting Resource Guide", which describes each and every field in the METRO-2 format and what should and should not be reported for each type of furnisher, including OCs, JDBs/CAs, child support, etc.

It used to be available online for free on CDIA's website, but now they sell it. There are a few archived copies of the 2006 version floating around the internet.
