CA asks for social security number - what do I do?

I called one of my CA's and they asked for my SS number - I said I should not have to give it to them and they said they can't look up my account without it - what is people's experience on here in situations like that? What do I say if I do not want to give them my SS number? Thanks for the advice!

I think there is a part of the social security law that requires a company to change your account number upon request. I do not know what it is off hand but I am sure you can Google it. I think the only federal and state government organization can require a social security number and only for purposes that are explained to you as the applicant, as well as what will happen when you do not give your social security number.

I would simply tell them that since they cannot force you to give them your social security number under federal law, they either will have to find another way to look up your account or you can assume that you do not have an account with the organization. I am sure however they will call you with the account on their computer ready to go.

Actually, it's quite likely the CA does not have your SS number and is fishing for it. Often, skip tracing sources have 2 or 3 SS numbers tied to a person's name. This would be a good way to isolate the correct one. This also means that the SS number (or numbers) they have may not be you.

At a minimum, they can look you up via your name, address, or contact phone number. Tell them if they want to discuss getting paid, they need to be able to locate your account by one of these parameters.

This is extremely common. Collectors have full access to your credit file and know your social security number, usually they will just ask for the last 4 digits. If you tell them you are uncomfortable giving that information out, they will usually verify who you are by asking for other information such as your birthday and street address.

I would never give out my SSN to any CA. Their records should reflect more personal information than you'd ever want to know about. If you ever paid the account in question by check, guess what. That CA probably has the banking information associated with that payment.

So don't give them your SSN. If they won't talk to you without it, let things play out the way they will88-).
