Ms_Nomer
Need some help here. In the state of New York, what is required of Collection Agencies to collect out of state? Do they have to have a collector's license? Where can I check to see if this company is legit? (Specifics please.) Much thanks.
Chapel Hill
Contact AG Coumo's office. Someone in his office can provide you the information you need.
Ms_Nomer
Thanks Chapel Hill - it's the CA in New York, but I've submitted an inquiry to AG Gen Coumo anyway. For the record, does anyone know if New York collection agencies are required to be licensed so consumers have a way to determine authenticity of claims?I gotz a headache. Chapel Hill
Your AG is the only one in the nation who routinely sends out guys with badges and guns. They investigate where most states wont. They arrest where most states wont. They shut these guys down, where most states wont. You shouldnt have a headache, you should be grateful to be a yankee with a pitbull watching your six. Have you done a civil litigation record search in as many jurisdictions as you can to determine who if anyone has sued this CA, when and the result. County courthouse records are a matter of public record. Anyone who has sued them the information is there for your review and use.
Ms_Nomer
I wish I was a yank now - it is the creditor who is located in New York, while I am in Wisconsin. I've written the AG in NY and continue to wait for a reply. In the meantime, I can't find any legit data on this business.headache continues... wah, but thanks for the info on Coumo! BrokeBob
The AG in Wisconsin got his office because his predecessor got drunk and drove a state-owned vehicle into a tree. Oh, and she was using the state vehicle for personal business. Believe it or not, she was not charged with any crime(*), and so served out her term.As for the new AG, I don't know what his record is on consumer matters. He certainly is not as much of an activist as his predecessor, and nowhere near the AGs of NY and MN. (*) Although Wisconsin has toughened up its drunken driving laws in recent years, it still has the most lenient DWI and DUI laws in the US. It is the ONLY state in the US in which first offense is not a crime, only a ticket. Second and third offenses are misdemeanors. Under the old law, fifth and later are felonies, the new law, which may not have taken effect yet, fourth and later are felonies. It is not uncommon to read in Wisconsin papers about a driver being caught for his 6th or 11th or whatever offense. The Wisconsin Tavern League has a very strong lobby, and Wisconsin has the best beer in the US.
Recovering Attorney
There is no general statewide requirement for CAs to be licensed in New York State. New York City requires a license. I believe Westchester County and the City of Buffalo do, too. Why do you think that is significant to you in the second best state for cheese? BrokeBob
EXCUSE ME! Did you know that Wisconsin is the only state in the Union that has certified Master Cheesemakers? There is a county in S. Central Wisconsin, along the Illinois border called Green County. Ony 30,000 people in it, mostly of Swiss German descent, but it has more cheesemakers than any other county. It also has a lot of breweries. Good beer, and good cheese. The largest town is Monroe. The HS team is the Monroe Cheesmakers. As in blessed are the Cheesemakers...I notice that when I travel from Wisconsin to NY, the New Yorkers request things like Cheese, brats and gingseng. Friends in Wisconsin request various ethnic foods from New York. The last time I went to NY I brought milk with me so I could drink the good stuff. Oh, the other day I bought a gallon of hormone-free milk for $1.99. How much is it in NY?Gee, all this fake rage is tiring.
