I got a copy of a fax the payroll department at my school got in yesterday asking for employment location information. It's from a Cornerstone Resolution Group, Inc in New York but I cannot find any information about them and I have no idea what it's about. I have a $40 collection because the two checks I sent to pay the bill originally never got there because they were never cashed, but the name on that is SKO Brenner American, INC. Other than that, the other debts I had are a few years past the 7 year collection window.

Any ideas who these people are?

I would first contact the local court and see if they have a judgment against you. If not, then I would contact this company with a very stern letter stating that they have violated your rights, are not to contact you company or you anymore, and if they do, you intend to discuss the issue with an attorney.

Unless the debt is for income taxes (state and fed), student loans, or Child Support, an organization cannot garnish your wages without obtaining a judgment and seeking a court order.

You could turn on a tape recorder and call them and ask about it, being sure not to give them any usefuil information in the process.

Before you record, make sure you are a single party state. If you are a two party, do not let them know you are recording and use only for your own benefit, not against them. By this, you would use it only for transferring your "notes" to paper, then erase the recording.

Yes, you could ask them if you can record, but, many times they will say no, then hang up, assuming you will record anyway. Be very careful on this as it could bite back.

So far, the only state that requires consent to record for court purposes is WI (although I am sure you can make "notes" from the recording and not use it in court). Most other 2 party states are informational only which means, you only have to inform in order to record, not ask for permission.

Really though, I still say the first thing to do is to look to see if there is a judgment against you held by these guys. If not, you really have a smoking gun right there (third party notification and possibly violation of civil procedure) and calling them would be only to add to the pile.

How do I go about finding out if there is a judgement against me? And wouldn't I have been contacted by the courts regarding this? I have received nothing from this company at all...and definitely nothing from the courts. As fpr state/fed taxes, child support, etc. there is none of that at all...just the credit debt and that is a couple years past the statute of limitations on those.
