Settlement on parking tickets?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I wasn't able to find anything related on the forums. I owe the City of Buffalo about $1,100 in parking tickets (don't ask how) from 6 months to a year ago. They suspended my registration and have since been transferred to Mercantile. I spoke with the CA and they said they were not able to settle since they are city tickets. I think the CA is in-house for the city but am not sure.

Anyway, is this true? That I cannot have my registration reinstated unless I pay the full amount? And if so, and I have the option to pay the city or the CA, which should I pay?

Unfortunately, I think you're pretty much at their mercy here. I was in a similar situation years ago when I had a University bill (from a state school) get refered to the state collection agency. They were going to withhold my tax return so I just had to go ahead and pay it in full. Plus, I don't think they ever get penalized for FDCPA violations as I would get letters that said right on the outside of the envelope that they were from the state collection agency (I know private CAs can't have unambiguous company names like that printed on the envelopes they send you).

I think you will have to just bite the bullet and pay the bill in full, as soon as possible, because one way or another they will get the money.

This is going to depend on how the system is setup locally. However I have seen in many cases where there is a way to work it out and get some leanancy. First call or visit the clerk and ask if they have a payment program and what you need to do to get onto it. Go prepared to make a good faith payment toward the tickets. If they do not have a payment program go visit the judge during the ex-parte hearing time and request a payment program, after making a good faith payment and having the documentation in hand that you did. You can also ask the judge to reduce the amount some also.

The courts realize that if they shut down your use of the ar completely, you can not work. If you can not work, you can not pay. Most often they have some way to make payments or otherwise allow usage of the car for work at least.

Most important if you get on payments, stick to it as it can be contempt of court if you fail to live up to the agreement and they can throw you in jail.
