I had a credit card with Columbus Bank and Trust that I became delinquint on. The DOFD is 07/2005.

The account is showing a CO status and was sold to SST/CIGPF1CORP and they are trying to collect a balance of about $609. They are reporting a DOFD of 03/2006.

I really don't want to wait for them to go away....here are my questions.

1.) i can pay the full amount, should i try to settle?

2.) will settling make my sscore any worse than it already is versus paying in full.?

Down the road I will try and challenge it a get it removed.

I report it to the CRAs first and try and have it removed that way. The reporter may not verify it.

Assuming you have some good accounts, this one certainly isn't hurting you but if you want it removed, don't pay the collection agency without getting it in writing first that they will remove from your credit reports.

Verbal is not good enough because you will have no proof. Needs to be in writing. That way if they don't remove it, you can send your letter to the CRAs to have it removed.

The forums hear frequently "but they said they would remove it if I paid it" and that never happens.

You can dispute the debt possibly by saying you did not have an account with SST. If it comes back verified you could write SST and request they prove they own the debt and have a right to report it. This may require a willingess on your part to sue them if they can't prove ownership and won't remove the entry.

Pay for delete? If they agree to that I'd get every detail in writing...notarized if possible...the Pope's signature wouldn't hurt...and go from there.
